I don't know if it's a coincidence but, since I stopped using a/c all the time, there's a funny smell in the cabin; a kind of fuel smell.

I'm not sure if it is fuel but it's got that 'tang'.

Is this something anyone else has experienced?

I doubt very much it's fuel, i would imagine it's oil and it's burning, check your rocker cover gasket as they don't last very long, easy to change if it's not that then you got an oil leak somewhere else.

What has happened is, in turning off your AC the cabin is now bringing in fresh air from under the bonnet, you could turn Recycle on, this will stop it but you will steam up :( also our A/C does not work when the temp goes below 5c so this means you will start smelling it again too lol

It doesn't smell like burning oil to me (unless this long-life stuff they put in S4s smells different).

I've found turning the blower on low and not directing it seems to give off less smell.

I've got it booked into the garage across the road from my work tomorrow.

Just a bit worried now that this (and all future issues) are going to be a problem because of the lack of space around the huge engine.

Is it a petrol type smell, or an exhaust fumes type smell?

DIAGNOSED!!

I took it into my local VAG specialist (http://www.independentgarageservices.co.uk/) and the technician found the problem in under 10 seconds!

One of the injectors is leaking at the top so they're going to replace the top and bottom seals of the whole bank.

It's a relief just to get it diagnosed - and I'm pleased it's on top of the engine too.
