    Multitronic gearbox issue

    hi all

    i have a 2001 (51 plate) A4 SE on 53k

recently while stopping for traffic lights etc, the multitronic seems to cut off from the engine and the PRND symbol on the dash flashes.

any thoughts on whats wrong with it ??

Does that mean nothing actually wrong with the gearbox ? Just a electrical fault ?

Best to get it on vagcom james and see what errors it throws up, hopefully its just a sensor or something easy, if its the ecu its an expensive part and around 7 hours to fit!! your looking at around 800+ for a new one fitted as I believe you can only get them from audi..........

Just following on from this, my 2.5 TDI multitronic gearbox I fear is giving me trouble as well, instead of the PRND flashing it lights up a constant red I can't use the manual gear change either. I spoke to Audi stealers and the chap in the service department reckons that the gearbox is damaged possibly due to the oil not being changed every 40k (mines is on 85k) checked with Audi Wearside and they reckon that on the 35k and 57k services there is no record of the gearbox oil being changed. I can't believe that this is the case, potentially this could mean that there is major damage to the box resulting in a replacement at the ridiculous price of 3500, this is not economically viable for me to repair/replace gearbox on a car worth 4000-5500.

Gutted for you bud, being a multitronic owner myself it does nothing for my confidence in the car when I keep hearing other peoples woes

Having read many posts from people with problems the common factor running through all of them is the fact that Audi will strike back with the old 'gearbox oil not changed at specified time' response yet it seems that the reason most haven't been done at the correct time seems to lie with the dealers and the long life servicing!! When I checked with the dealer who had serviced my car before I had it the gearbox oil wasn't changed until 55k!! When I asked why it hadn't been done at the previous service they said it was not required as it was only on 39k at that time!!! I then asked why it wasn't done at 80k and they said there was no need as because it was done late it wouldn't need doing til 95k !! I don't think they have emphasised how important it this oil change is as nowhere in the service/handbook does it give any explicit information about having it done at the correct time so as far as I'm concerned the blame lies with audi uk and their dealer network!!!

Anyway rant over, there is a multitronic specialist in Milton Keynes, Ive never used them myself but have read good things about them, might be worth a call.....

hope you get it sorted without too much expense....

its still happening on my a4, the esp light came on so it went on vag com

it was only the esp fault came that came up, nothing up came up

surely the gearbox ecu fault would show up on vag com wont it ?? or maybe the problem is nothing to do with the gearbox ecu

My 2003 Audi A4 cabriolet is having gearbox problems. It's a 3.0 Multitronic with 33,000 miles and recently ALL of the PRND lights all came on instead of just the D light. WhenI select reverse, the car doesn't move unless I give it some revs. When moving from a stationery position i.e. traffic lights, there is sometimes a delay after I hit the throttle and then it jolts a few times. The car also seems a lot more noisy, with a clicking sound.

I took the car the Audi who said the gearbox had gone and are asking for nearly 5000 to replace it. A few people have mentioned it could be the ECU. Anyone got any tips on what I should do now???

Doesn't sound good I'm afraid Best to get it checked out properly as another member paid 1000 to have the ecu changed and it resolved nothing and he still had to have the gearbox refurbed
Never used themmyself but it might be worth speaking to these guys....

    Thanks Mark

They're a little bit out of my way but worth giving a call all the same.

Had a call from Audi today, they asked if I wanted them to go ahead and replace the gearbox. I said at 5000??? NO THANKS!! I did enquire about the ECU unit and they confirmed it was fine. It's just the gearbox that's faulty which apparently has metal filings inside.

I rang a few gearbox specialists today and received quotes from 1700 - 2500 for repairs or replacement.
Think I'll do a bit more research before making a decision....

This thread has made me VERY NERVOUS, so much so that mines in at the mo having the gearbox oil flushed and changed as i've not been able to find any service history/ bills that show whether my oils been changed and im on 96000 miles!!!

Im getting it done at my mates garage the oil alone is costing me 100 at trade price !!! theres two different quotes for how much you need thou one states 5 litres the other states 8 yep 8 litres and at 10.53 + vat per litre what ever doesn't get used is going back..It seems to be a grey area in the service book mine is full audi history for all but two services/independent for the last two and nothing to say whether its been done.

Does anybody know how much oil they take

    Multitronic oil change

I changed my oil about 4 weeks ago after realising that it had not been changed for 80K - as I have recently acquired the car.

I got the oil from Opie oils (Fuchs ATF CVT oil) for about 50 for 5L. An oil change takes about 4.5L without any flushing etc & I plan to change it every 20K from now on.

Its a bit of a procedure changing it (ie gravity feeding it from underneath; & allowing it to overflow at 45C; whilst running the engine & working momentarily through the gears) to ensure its filled properly. Having a VCDS using the ATF temp readout helps but before I had this I used a digital thermometer blue tac'ed onto the sump!

A small occasional shudder seems to have dissappeared in the engine/transmission & all seems fine - at the moment.......

A gain I'm not inspired with confidence reading these forums as I had a 2.5 A6 TDI that did 220K & I changed the tiptronic's lifelong oil at 180K for 'good measure'.

    John
