1.8t 190 are there any water pump issues on this model?

Hi everyone does anyone know if the 1.8t 190 quattro has a particular problem with water pumps. My car had a water pump failure in 2007 [with previous owner] it had done 38,654 miles and was replaced under warranty. I bought the car in may this year and the first job was a cambelt change along with idler and tensioner, I asked about water pump as i was aware that they are recommended to be done at the same time, because the new pump had only been on 2 years and the car had only covered 26,206 miles since fitting i was advised that it would be fine. Unfortunatley I have a coolant leek and under pressure testing was told that the problem was around the water pump, because it is only a gentle leak the garage said they would try some sealant, but i'm still having to top up so it looks like another bill. I presume its a gasket failure around pump? Should this need replacing so soon and does any one think its worth a call to the dealers that fitted pump or just bite the bullet and get it done. Is this something thats likely to happen again in another 30-40,000 miles. Thanks all, a fed up Rog 190 Quattro.

First rule of thub is change water pump when doing the timing belt. The standard audi wp has plastic fins which can fail some wp's have metal fins . Change the pump GSF can supply you one at a good price.

i had the same problem which i didnt really take much notice of. ended up toppin up the coolant every week til one day is jus dissappeared! ended up having a water pump failure along with a oil pump failure! ( not linked) but as cmd mentioned the plastic fins are feeble an have a habit of falling apart! best option is to get it changed over with the metal fin water pump.... better to be wary n change it then to ignore it like i did n end up having to replace the whole engine! ( btw it was a 190 like yours... an a pain in the *** to source!)

Yeah, i agree with the above, replace the waterpump at every cambelt change regardless, its a 10 minute job once the cam belt is off. There is no gasket as such, its a rubber o ring. Mine was replaced (also 190 quattro s-line) with a metal impellored pump a little while ago. All ok since.

Mine is booked in tomorrow at the "audi-specialists". I mentioned the metal finned water pump but as they could not guarantee the work for a non-audi genuine part they advised against it. If the standard audi one packs up, it's all guaranteed and they're responsible.

So it'll be having new cam belt, water pump and tensioners as well as your usual 20k service. And I'm also having them sort out my slow/completely not working wipers as mine were so corroded absolutely nothing I tried would get the wiper arms to come off.

Service prices on their site are the same as what he has quoted me if you were interested in price comparison.

And if that wasn't enough; RS4 front brakes currently being sand blasted and should be powder coated begining of next week and all fitted by the weekend in time for an MOT. :weight_lift2:

Turns out it was'nt water pump but a corroded screw somewhere but i have'nt had a chance to speak to my mechanic to see exactly where it was but my wife seems to think they said it was at the back of the engine.Still loads cheaper than new pump

Make sure you use a genuine water pump, the quaility of them are much better than the pattern ones and the impellers are now a very light metal! not had any problems with the revised genuine ones!

At audi-specialists? Yes, definitely. And they did a great job too. Had the car for the whole day, and decided to cap the labour charge as apparently it was getting silly when they found that incorrect filters had been used for a previous service which took AGES to remove and replace.

They also sorted out my knackered wipers for free. I could not recommend them enough, definitely very knowledgeable. I don't think I'll ever take my car to anyone else.
