Going to see a nice looking 04 plate A4 quattro 190 S-line 1.8t later, just wondering if there are any issues to check for?

Its done around 60k with full service history, silver half leather interior, lots of extra's (electric pack, heated seats, light pack, rear electric blinds, 18" twin spoke RS4's).

What miles should the cambelt be done on this model, also does it need anything else replacing with the cambelt, such as water pump, cambelt tensioners etc?

So just after any specific pointers to check out?

Also any issues on tuning this version of the 1.8t?

Would you use super unleaded or regular (before & after tuning)? i had a b5 1.8t Passat with an upsolute chip in the past and that ran 16psi boost on regular and 20psi on super, no idea how much super is these days as sold the passat about 4 years ago

Whats the real world mpg of these?

TIA

Simon

i bought mine in august, 190 quattro sline avant. its an amazing car to drive, although the clutch feels strange to be but probably cause of the 4wd system. dificult to feel the biting point imo but thats just my own gripe.

They are amazing cars to drive the power is really amazing at time just how fast this hunk of metal can move.

What to check.
cambelt cambelt cambelt
mine is 04 on 50k and the previous owner had the waterpump fail on him about 46k he however pulled over the moment the temp went up and had it towed to his audi specialist. but if yours hasnt been done then the cmabelt could snap or the water pump could fail. this is reasonably cheap to fix on the quattro due to engine position.

Bring spare coilpacks :) these go without warning!

As for super vs regular, on the fuel cap it states it will run on regular, but it recommends premium, so i use premium.

MPG ive found 4 levels

If i drive carefuly ill do 34-36mpg
If i drive without caring just regular toodling along i get 30-32mpg
if im giving it some for a bit of fun etc then were into 20-25mpg
on a track day or up pod 10 ish?

Oh also they are very sensative to oil staying the same so my advice is when you get the car, have a complete flush out andreplace with some proper good quality long life oil fully synth and then change that every year or half service intervals.

its only 50 quid or so for oil and it will keep her runnign smooth.

quattro mpg (and driving feel / exploitability) will be pretty different to the FWD version... given your (Hightower's) previous questions, I'm guessing that you only have the 190FWD in your sights?

I think the belt needs doing around 70k on the 1.8T and I think the waterpump is recommended to be done at the same time. Most do both around 60k, so you might be okay there, but worth checking.

I wouldnt let it go much further than 60K without replacing the cam belt and water pump

its not the miles its the age, its 60-80k or 5 years. 04 = 5 years.

It's a quattro Lostbok.
It's just outside my cash budget but I think worth looking at due to the spec it has and is only 20miles from home and will be good to see how it drives compared to the 2.5tdi last weekend and you never know if I got offered a good price for the golf then it's within reach.

Just checked the ad again and actually done 69k not 60 so hopefully it's had the cambelt done.

I wouldnt let it go over 5 years either, its just a peice of rubber

Anyone with one of these and has also tried out or had the 1.9tdi as I would be interested in your thoughts on whether the 2 models were close in performance for day to day situations due to the tdi's torque advantage, as I would like to know whether the 1.8t's lower mpg is worth it over the 1.9tdi.

The options for the Quattro are:
1.9TDI 130PS - much more nimble than the 2.5TDI, VERY economical and can be tuned to 175bhp+. But residuals are very high compared to the extra grunt you get with the others, so only worth it if you're doing 15k-20k p.a.
1.8T (various: 150-190PS) - lightest and most nimble of the quattro's, most tuning potential: 220bhp usually pretty easy on the 190's... 300-400bhp if you get yer hands dirty..
2.5TDI 180PS (mine)- heavy, but bags of smooth torque through from 1500-4500rpm that more than shifts that weight... and it's a decently economical cruiser too... tunable to a "still-economical" 210-220bhp... 250bhp if you really don't mind economy and getting your hands a little dirty... but would be better off with the 1.8T if you're heading that way as the car is about 100kg's heavier (see my previous post on the Bhp/ton figures).

and then the 3.0 V6, 4.2V8, etc....

HT - just bear in mind that the 2.5TDI that you drove last weekend sounds like it was an absolute lemon - you need to drive a decent one :)

Thanks LB

well what a stonking car!!!! Completely different experience to last weekend, dealer very helpful, they even stayed open an extra hour for us to have a look, gave us the keys so we could have a test drive.

To boot they offered me what I wanted part ex on the golf (basically what I paid for it in June) without any haggling and is top book price, so deal done, pick it up next Saturday :)

Cambelt done on last service, next service due in 3k but they are doing that for me next week.

i had a 1.9 diesel leon tuned to 150+, the a4 is miles better in real world fantasy world any world.

Once the backdraft is on it then it will be amazing.

Doh! Saw that on the re-read!

Congrats HT! If I could have afforded a newer model I would have been sorely tempted by a 1.8T 190 Quattro S-Line... they're the pick of all the B6's IMO.

Bring it up to a Chip'N'Spin rolling road session (in Bromley)... £250 for a "before" dyno, remap and "after" dyno run... well worth it! Should remap to 220bhp without any real adverse economy / clutch effects... you can probably get a bit more out of it, but you're at the limits of the injectors and clutch too if you're not careful.

I'll probably be heading across (from London) for the next one just for a dyno run and to meet a few people from the forum.

Hi high tower, this is my first post on this audi site, i also live in somerset and bought my 1.8T quattro s-line in january with 59K on clock. The car had a full Audi service history but it had not had the belt done. The belt should be replaced at 60K or 5 yrs whichever is sooner, also have the waterpump done as the plastic impellors have a habbbit of either breaking up or spinning on the shafts, a metal impellored one is available. The damper assy is usually just inspected at 60K and replaced at 120K, the roller idler should be done at every cambelt change. If you live near to yeovil you can use TPS for your oil Quantum fully synthetic longlife 111 and the bigger oil filter 068 115 561 F, £3 for filter and £22 for oil. Change every 5K to 6K, let turbo spool and cool, lastly, enjoy. P.s, hope the tax stays at £210!!!!!!!!!!!and not up to £420!

I live in Yeovil Rhen, where is TPS?

According to Parkers website the tax is going up to £245 from next April

Thanks, was too good a deal to pass on, didnt take much persuasion for the missus to say yes to it either, was made much easier when they offered such a good trade in price for the Golf. She was nagging me a bit on the way, saying it was more expensive than what i said our budget was etc etc and not as economical as the golf but i said we are not going to buy it, just to look as it was so close to home and that it was 3 years younger and 30k miles less than the 2.5tdi last weekend.
She did moan at me on the test drive as i was accelerating along a dual carriageway, i think her words were "your not buying this to be a racer", i duely said i was only testing the acceleration to check it was ok:thumbsup:

Has a date been set for the next RR day, i've read quite a few posts talking about them but no one seemed to have a date for it?

Hightower, i work in yeovil (helicopter manufacturing company!!!!) TPS or trade parts specialist are located next to the tool station, they only do genuine audi parts (VAG group) i have a trade account so...........if you need consumables (nod nod wink wink) I had my cambelt changed by autotechnics in gillingham, the previous owner had changed the waterpump for a metal one previously, but i was unsure if the belt had been changed or not, (silly not to as has to come off to replace water pump) as for fuel economy, drove to the scottish highlands in august and averaged 37.2mpg, usually around 33 to 35 on a sedate run. I always use super plus unleaded, have heard good reviews on the shell v power but it could be dear.Car been excellent apart from the coolant bleed screw was sheared off and leaking, (bodgy main dealers!) that was a pain in the a** to remove and the glovebox hinge broke, but i fabricated a new one out of titanium (cheers work) any more questions, feel free.............Rhen.

Thanks for that. The missus works at the same helicopter company.

Thats good mpg for the trip to Scotland, what sort of speeds was that then, i suppose once your on the M5/6 and cruising its pretty good on fuel.

Have you added any mods to your car or had it remapped?

Standard as far as i know, i would like to have it re-mapped but not sure if the other half would think its such a good idea. Speed up to scotland was 80 ish most of the way, obviously when you are in 6th gear on the motorway, you just stick there for 550 miles!!!!!!!!!
