    Mileage from a 1.8T

    I'm the owner of a 2003 Audi A4 1.8T Sport convertible which has just reached 85,000 miles on the clock.

    It's had belt and water pumps changed about 10k ago.

    I was wondering what sort of milage these engines can get to, i was planning on changing the car but other commitments (ie new house) have meant that is on hold for a while, so i'm pretty much stuck with my car and getting a bit paranoid that things are going to start to go seriously wrong???

    The only thing I would be worried about is if you have the multitronic gearbox. Prone to failure and 5K to replace.

    lol, I don't think many people would be complaining if they were "stuck" with that car mate!

    Don't think you've got anything to worry about.

    'Stuck' was probably a bit harsh of a word! :-)

    I fancied a S3, but that looks to have been put on hold now. The convertible is a great car, it's just it doesnt get that much use in Sunderland, hardly the warmest place on earth! :-)

    Glad you've asked this as im changing to a 1.8T Avant soon(ish) and was wondering how these do on mileage.

    Guess it all down to how well its looked after as with any car...

    There are many B5 1.8T A4s running into high 100 000s and even a few 200 000+ milers with no major issues.. the engines are pretty much the same in the B6s too.

    1.8T quattro 2001, 214,000 miles and still going strong, same turbo, engine, gearbox, exhaust, clutch.

    Only things I have changed is fuel pump, 2 cam belts, 2 relays and a blower motor.

    This 1.8T is even more bullet proof then my 180,000 mile 2.6 quattro I had before.
    Only thing i hate about the 2001 1.8t is the stupid 5 speed gearbox, it rev's like f**k at 80mph, 3,500 rpm

    I also chuck any old oil in, and i mean it, I mix synth with semi and mineral, i just whack in a litre every 5k miles when the light comes on, it gets serviced as an when I can be bothered, it still drives like new and looks like new, although the driver seat bolster bit is broken <only recently> having my 16 stone arse to contend with every day doesn't help

    And how is education supposed to make me feel smarter? Besides, every time I learn something new, it pushes some old stuff out of my brain. Remember when I took that home winemaking course, and I forgot how to drive?

    yeah people have been telling me for years that Audi's have a sludge problem, well i have owned 3 now and from my experience this 1.8t is a bloody amazing engine, I have owned the car for 5 years in dec, the finance was over 5 years so in 2 months the car is paid for, if it drops dead after 220k miles with an oil sludge problem i will gracefully take it into a field and give it a proper burial

    Then i will go buy another 1.8T Quattro over 5 years with 70k miles on the clock, and start the whole procedure over again, i may even get 2 grand part exchange if the car is still running as good as it is today, cheap motoring if you ask me....:P

    Oh i forgot to say i had a coil pack go at 201,000 miles the first one I have ever changed, so add 25 quid to the total cost of ownership

    Maybe the sludge problem is only to the 2003's?? Mine is running good, I run Castrol Syntech 5W-40 in it as it has always used off the lot, and there hasn't seemed to be any problem. I am probably going to switch over to Valvoline Synpower though cause I simply fancy them for many reasons such as cost and protectingness.

    Lol I am so bad, Castol whathisname and valvoline superspeed? I just goto tesco and buy the cheapest oil they have, Lidel supplied me with my last 5 litres and it costs 5 quid, I look in garages at the latest super special ultra protection molebdinum injector protection oil and 15 quid a litre and think OMG do people actually buy this stuff and i carry on driving with the oil light on for another few hundred miles till I can get some working class oil

    60 quid a gallon lol, keep the car 5 years and do 150k miles that's nearly a grand just on oil in a lifetime, i'm not driving a Buggati Veryon or even an Audi RS4, I don't rag the hell out of my car, now and again i might put my foot down, but the 1.8t is no drag car, I would buy a Subaru or Lancia if i wanted cheap ass high performance motor

    Those 20V 1.8T's engines are good for 100k if treated like absolute crud... 200k normally and there's plenty of well cared for examples running over 200k and still hitting spec (normally 150/163/190bhp).

    If it's had all it's oil services and the cambelt changed around the right time... then you're normaly fine.... there's odd coil-pack problem and the clutch will wear evenually (Ronny's 200k+ on the orignal clutch is fairly rare)... I think if you drive them hard and don;t let the turbo's cool down they are prone to wear, but I think that's also in the 150k territory and not exactly killer-cost to replace...

    If you're after some more pace, just get yours remapped... it'll increase wear ont he turbo's and clutch, but still cheaper than getting a new car... but be warned, it's addictive.... injectors, uprated turbo, induction kits, etc are just around the corner

    My B6 1.8T BFB is still going strong @ 166k. Have always changed oil after 10,000
    with SLX-0 30W / Edge 5 30w + Engine flush.
    Have had around 6 coil packs go ( always carry in glove box! )
    Brake light switch
    Demist motor
    Airbag sensor
    changed 2 x cambelt

    Buying VAG.COM cable has paid for it's self many times.
