my friends A4 1.8t (b6) is having a few probs. It has cut out on him a couple of times and the EPC light is on.

I ran the codes and got the following:

I unplugged the MAF and the car ran fine - would you say that this is all pointing to the MAF being on its way out?

any help is much appreciated!

Change the MAF first, get the Bosch part number and go direct to a bosch dealer, will be cheaper that way. The System too lean, could be a boost leak somewhere, but change the MAF clear the codes and take it from there..

Clear the codes and take it for a run before you do anything, check the codes again and see what you got.
A few of those codes would indicate a crank sensor, this also brings on the epc light you mentioned.
HTH.

Just looked at the codes a little closer, and if they all come back again after you clear them I'd say Your friend has a boost leak and a crank sensor on the way out, maybe a few other lesser issues to.
I'm speaking from personal experience here but I'm no expert.

He has had these codes before - i cleared them and now they have returned! I will have a look at the car tomorrow to see if i can track any of these probs down.

Well
16706 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28): No Signal
P0322 - 35-00 - -
16395 - Bank 1: Camshaft A (Intake): ****** Setpoint not Reached (Over-Advanced)
P0011 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
I would say these 2 codes along with the EPC light and cutting out are caused by the crank sensor on the way out, it can also cause the tacho to go erratic and give a really bad kangaroo.
This one
17544 - Fuel Trim: Bank 1 (Add): System too Lean
P1136 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
and possibly this one
16490 - Manifold / Barometric Pressure Sensor (G71) / (F96): Implausible Signal
P0106 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
a vac leak

Others well maybe bad sensors/switches. There does seem to be alot of codes, I'd be tempted to check the wiring looms especially near the turbo as it does get incredibly hot there, when I bought my car I had about 6 wires melted or partially melted all shorting to each other due to a previous owners bodge.

Good luck

Some of those codes and what you are discribing are very similar to what i had on my 2001 1.8T.
Cause?, split vacum hose.
