    where is my thermostat ?

hi all, i have a 2002 audi a4 tdi 130 i think the engine code is awx.
i am going to change the thermostat but when i have read on this forum about it many people have said that it is at the front of the engine and the alternator has to be removed.
i have just looked in my haynes manual and that states it is on the left side of the engine and no mention of removing the alternator, can someone tell me which one is correct ?

i didnt think there was a haynes manual for these motors mate, what years does it cover? If its for the b5 motors the engines are different.

The stat is usually found at the end of the big bore pipe coming from the radiator to the block, behind the alloy housing the pipe connects to, at the front rhs just under the alternator. Thats a petrol one however, I really dont know if the diesel is different, just never ever seen a haynes book for the A4 B6 models, but I may be wrong

Nice link on the manual mate!

heres a link to vagcat - its the only thermo listed but shows its shape not the location, but another one seems to show the stat on the engine and not list it?!?

    Stat:
    http://www.vagcat.com/epc/cat/au/A4/...49/49/3124809/

    Location:

    http://www.vagcat.com/epc/cat/au/A4Q...49/49/3123953/

You can see it on the lower rhs with no cover on it i think. If you cant view these links tell me and i'll post the pics up

thanks alot, i have read a few posts saying that the alternator needs to be moved or swung out of the way but the haynes manual doesnt mention anything about the alternator.
i will have to have a good look in the morning, thanks again.

no problem mate. the alternator will definately be in the way of that area but not a big job to remove surely.
