hi, how can i tell what bhp my engine is as standard ?
i have a 2002 a4 1.9 tdi, the badge is a red i but this could be an aftermarket badge.
i recently bought it so dont have the full log book yet, is there any way of telling looking at the engine ?

Just look at the sticker in the spare wheel well, power should be 95kW for the 130bhp red i model, or 80kW for the 110 model.

Red i usually means a 130 - that's the badge that was on my 1.9TDi 130 Sport.

I think he wants to just double check in case someone has put a red i badge on.

thanks guys just checked the sticker in the boot it says 96kw so it is the 130bhp model.

also, aren't the 110bhp all 5 speed and the 130's 6 speed? or is that just the VW's (Mk4 Golf, Sharan, etc)?

just found it... for the 1.9TDi there's the regular SE and also a "6SE" and the same with Sport and a "6Sport"... 1.9TDi 130 available in both categories...

110Tdi only in 5 speed.... so I was half right  (clutching at straws, aren't I?)

130 changed from 5 to 6 speed at some point in 2003 IIRC. Torque was also upped from 210 - 228 lb/ft at the same time.

The B6 was never available with the 110 engine as that's pre-PD so only in the B5.

there was a 110 or 115hp PD motor for sure, as this was fitted to later model B5's

Dunno if it was carried over to the B6 though.

Aragorn - I was about to agree with you, but I think you're only partially right (the 110bhp wasn't a PD).

Macduff - not true B5's and B6's both came in PD (Pumpe Duse) and VP (Verteilerpumpe) flavours of 1.9 TDI and definitely not PD in the 180bhp-230bhp 2.5 V6 :D

I had a quick look and it seems that although there are VAG 1.9TDI at countless different bhp ratings, it would seem that the PD come in 100, 105, 115 and 130bhp.... but the 110bhp TDi's that went into first of the B6 A4's are actually the older VP37 flavour....

Which would explain the 5 speed being changed for a 6 speed to take advantage of the PD's increase in torque and compensate for it's narrower power band compared to the Verteilerpumpe TDI's.

OK, I wasn't specific enough. AFAIK, the 1.9 in the B6 was always PD. I've never heard of a VP 1.9 in a B6. The 1.9s were only available in 100 and 130 initially and both 5 speed. The 130 changed to a 6 speed and the torque was increased around 2003. The 115 engine was a late offering before the B7 came along. It was Euro4 compliant whereas the previous 1.9s had all been Euro3.

You're right about the B5. It came with the 115 1.9 in the last year or so of its life. I had thought it only came with the 90 and 110 VP engines.

Away from the A4, the 1.9 PD engine has been offered in power outputs from 100 - 160 PS.
