My first post, I have been hovering on the site for ages since I took possession of a 2001 Audi SE with a very poorly engine.
It has suffered the oil sludge issue that I have seen so much about on here.

The car was very very cheap and the body work and interior are as clean as they come. I was wondering if I could get peoples opinion on the engine. What have others done in my situation?

Is it worth getting this engine rebuilt?
Does it take the turbo with the oil starvation?
Can I use a similar engine code and have a remap carried out?
Are there any audi specialists in suffolk who could rebuild my engine so I could retain engine numbers ect?

Thanks for reading
Lee

Have a search but you'll probably struggle to get a replacement engine with that code so a rebuild is probably the quicker option.

The turbo should be inspected for damage but it's probably suffered.

how bad is the motor?

I'd start by giving it a diesel flush and refilling it with fresh oil before going any further if it acutally runs...

If it IS properly knackered, then i'd say swapping the motor out for another is the easier/cheaper option. You dont need to get the same engine code, as long as you use the sensors and injectors etc from your engine pretty much any longitudinal 20vt will fit.

Is there a list of ongitudinal 20vt engine codes.
Also I am assuming a remap would be required?

Id double check getting any engine as yours is a Quattro like mine and couldnt just get any old engine which was a ball ache.

I got another AVJ luckily in the end and since the replacement, its been running sweeeeet (touch wood)

Thank you for the heads up. A little more hunting around or find some one who can rebuild for me then.

as far as we know most folk on here that this happened to had around a £3k bill to repair the engine mate. However I learned that audi are picking up the tab on some engine failure due to sludge if you can PROVE that it was serviced on within the required intervals and with the correct oil, up to 8 years old.

This warranty is transferable but proving to their satisfaction may be difficult - see my post "about to top up your oil? STOP! read this first" on the front page of the forum, near the end I listed the article about the engine warranty, good luck mate :)

dont worry theres hope ..i have just replaced my avj with a bfb ,,everything is straight forward ,,had it running but now waiting on some new coil packs ,,as 2 went after the swap:icon_thumright:

Good stuff AudiSPort.

Yours Is a FWD aint it??

I would like to know if you can fit any engine when you have a Quattro, If you can then I guess I missed out on some cheap engines aswell.

you can. the quattro system is purely mechanical, the engine doesnt care what transmission is bolted to the back of it. Clearly if you fitted a 163/190hp engine to your 150hp car without remapping the ecu it would only run at 150hp, but if you were to fit the 190spec motor with its corresponding turbo, you'd be able to remap it to the same levels as the 190hp engine could be taken to normally.

Was it litrally a straight swap putting the AVJ engine anc onto the bfb engine?
If you have any more info I would really appreciate it.

Gutted, Where was you when I need this Advice!!!!:beee:

I came across **** loads of engines aswell and could have saved myself £600.

I did ask and was told not possible from a few and didnt ask in the B5 section because all the engines I wanted to know about were from a B6.

well after a few teething problems .:sos:.thats the car up and running ..avj out bfb in ..after getting it in ..witch was a straight fit ..i had a starting problem ..after 3 atempts to start it ..on the 3rd or 4th it went ,,good freind helped out ... as the top front camshaft sensor was going mental on the vagcom live readings ..had to strip it off and cut out the locating tooth on the pick up ring and adjust it 20 degrees ..and know starts on the button ..and has took out my limp mode light ..
