What happened to your engine??Wouldnt be failed Oil pump by chance...?

I had to find a new engine when mine shot it couple of years ago and I had the same question, Would any engine fit mine instead of having to find the rare AVJ engine, I was told by many that it wouldnt because of the particulars.....which I never did bother finding out because I was lucky to find another AVJ.

Before I actually got hold of the right one, I found loads of others and wanted to put a TT engine in but was told its too much hassle with wires etc. As I said, before I was to look into it further I found the right one and just wanted it sorting.

Mine is a Quattro so maybe its more harder to put any engine in but yours being FWD it might be easier a job.
The AVJ back then was a nightmare to find and when I did find one I had to pay alot more cash for it than any others!

I really can't see why it would be so difficult to slot another 1.8t engine in especially from another a4? The engine obviously does have some wiring but its only coolant & engine speed sensors, coilpacks, starter & alternator to the engine itself.

Maybe im being too simplistic, but big companies like audi tend to re-use a lot of design elements and tooling, so I would think that apart from bore / stroke ratio differences and injector volumes / ecu software, that the engines will be extremely similar in their connections to the car itself.

Try phoning round some audi independant garages as some must have attempted this already with the relatively large numbers of these engine which fail due to sludge & oil pump issues.
B4 TDI - old skool project / daily driver...if it ain't broke, it's probably an Audi...

Yeah thats the prob I had, Like Evil says, Its possible, Just the work involved. Theres not many mechanics id trust round my way and the specialist I use told me he didnt want to take a chnace fitting a different engine just incase it gives me and him too much grief and turns out to be a waste of time.

Im sure there is plenty of mechanics out there that could sort you out.

Regards to your engine, yes they are rare as fcuk...it took me 3wks of serious digging around, on the phone constant phoning everyone and anyone. I remember having a list of around 50 odd breakers one day and I was getting desperate, I must have got to the last few and a place down south called ALLAUDI (www.allaudi.co.uk) and they had one. What a relief, cost me a packet but had to be done. Give them a call because their website aint up to date - thats if you already havnt!!
If at the time a different engine could have been fitted then I would have saved myself approx 400 on the engine alone...

Any 1,8T engine will fit, using your original ancillaries, be it quattro or FWD.

TT ones fit too, but you'll have to use your original mounts, sump, manifolds / turbo and all ancillaries from your original longitudonally-mounted engine.

Thanks J7uss, thanks siena, im gonna go for the original one, save on any hassle that may happen with the ecu etc. jsut wanting the car back on the road. I found an engine on ebay from a scrappy i think it was, what he did was pulled it apart to sell it seperately, so the head block and sump was seperated, i spoke to my mechanic and he reckons its not worth it to get that n put it back together, he goes it mihgt start smoking or it just might not be the same. so ill give allaudi a call n try n find one thats in one peice!

well i called allaudi, and he basically told me there was a 0% chance of me getting an avj engine, they are that rare! he said my best option would be to rebuild the existing engine... so now im stuck with a car that wont run. what do u guys think of that engine that was pulled apart?

I think you have to be careful here. There was a post a few months back where someone had a 1.8 from an auto car that wouldn't fit their manual car due to a difference in the output at the end of the crank. It appears that engines for autoboxes have a different crank!

I'm not sure that a transverse engine will work in an A4 either as I was under the impression that the mounts were part of the casting.

Having said that, I'm sure that an A4 163/190 1.8T engine would go in without too many issues. I'd want to have the ECU and ancillaries too.

see i'd like to upgrade to the 190 engine as the other one is proving very difficult to find, but my mechanic is a bit wary about a conversion in case anything goes wrong. he is telling me to wait and find an avj...

afaik the engine internals are identical bar the 190's slightly larger turbo and it will happily bolt up in place of the original unit

I would keep the original ECU, and the original injectors etc to ensure the fuelling is correct, but otherwise i suspect you'll be fine fitting a 163 or 190, just ensure you use your original inlet manifold and you'll be fine.

ok i've decided to go against that idea... i've decided to get my engine stripped and rebuilt. its getting done at a cost of 1250 cash. i got a couple of calls this morning for an engine, one guy quoted 2056.25 and the other quoted 1400. instead of going down that ruote, keep my original engine (save the headache from dvla etc) n get a rebuild on it.

thanks for all your help though guys!

I think you've made the right choice now

    But,

    For the 190ps BEX you'd need (I'd guess) -

    #Turbo
    #Injectors
#Right hand intercooler (190 has two)
    #Some extra hoses
    #Re-map to suit

    HTH

    BUB
    A4 Avant S-Line quattro - Avus Silver/Silver Half Leather *240ps*346nm* - a few choice mods. Now Stared up ;-)
