I have a tapping noise on start up for about 3 secs that seems a lot louder than the usual oil into lifters noise.could it be the turbo on its way out?car is 1.8t 190sport with 65000 on it.
Any advice most appreciated

chances are it could be a starved top end/turbo. The oil pick up pipe from the sump to the top of the engine(which also feeds the turbo bearings) is reknowned for blocking up, then staving the tappets of oil and the turbo bearing. seriously book the car into a VAG specialist and get the sump off and pick up pipe changed and fresh fully synth oil. Its probably a 150 quid job. the pipe is about 8quid.

It happened to me( i was unaware of the problem) on a run to cornwall and ended up costing me nearly 1000quid because i melted the turbo bearings. luckily no other damage was done.

Audi know of the problem. in the USA with full dealer history they'd do it under waranty. but Audi UK basically ****** everyone off.

google search 1.8t oil light

I had a wee ticky noise at start up soon after buying the car, and realised the seller (garage) had done an oil change with regular cheap mineral oil, and the dreaded "black sludge" problem was starting to happen, which blocks the pick up and turbo oil pipes then kills the motor. I did a full flush myself after I found the sludge and filled it with fully synthetic 5w30 oil from a motor factors, D&A in glenrothes, £35 a gallon, filter £4, and new sump bolt from Specialist Cars (vw) in kirkcaldy at £1.35, was a bit of a cow to get the under tray off and on, and the oil filter was as tight as a nuns crack, but a chain wrench sorted that eventually!

doesnt tap or tick now, and drives smoother, more revvy.

cheers for replys fellas

I did do a search and **** loads came up

Just come back from stealers 350 poorer but got MOT and service and pipes checked out,and new wiper blades 33quid,Tech guy said my engine was fine,3 birds killed in one stone(day off)

courtesy car was an 08 A6 Sline avant 2.0tdi very nice but slow, engine too small for car
