Is it normal for a 1.8T to sound a little like a diesel when you 1st start it up, only seems to last a couple of seconds??

haha yes i had the same issue and i wrote it in previous section. it sounds diesel then its alrigt isnt it? its something to do with the belt something like that its ok just live with it :)

As has been posted before, it's due to oil pressure in the hydraulic tappets. It takes a couple of seconds to get them up to pressure before they close up the gaps correctly. It should only happen after the car has sat for a while so if it's happening more frequenty or after short stops then it may be worth looking at a higher viscosity oil or going as far as getting the tapets replaced but I'm sure that would be £££

....or it could be the common Cam chain tensioner, it happens with mine from cold starts sometimes, always has, lasts for a second or two. Apparently alot of the Audi's do it.
