well you better unsell them, sharpish!
the battery died several months ago and hasnt been used since then, or can i just bang another battery in it'll work straight away?

This is what it says in the owners manual.
After each changing of battery the system will have to be re-synchronised
if the vehicle is locked use the key to unlock it-
press the unlock button-
insert key into ignition and switch on ignition-
switch off and remove key-
press the unlock OR lock button.
