Hi all, apologies as this is another 'which oil' type of question!
After endless searches for this I've learned that firstly, my car ( 2.0 N/A) needs fully synth oil in. Now I was totally put off when the oil warning light came on on a sunday afternoon (of all times), with no oil in the back I succumbed to the horrendous BP price of a 1 litre Castrol edge 5w/30 fully synth.costing.....£20 WTF!!!!
So knowing that when the car had had its servicing it was filled up with quantum synta silver oil - which is semi syth BTW I was happy knowing that GSF were doing it majorly cheap.
To which leads me on to today's purchase (eventually)
Bought a 5 litre tub of Fuchs Titan XTR oil (they dont do quantum anymore) but even after confirming it with the sales staff he said that the 505 00 conformed to the VW spec. So start of the searching...
What I've found is that although my service book says 501.01 I can now use the 503/504. Is the 503 only good for the S3 and TT?? the 00 at the end of the rating indicates its good for improved fuel economy, whereas the 01 indicates its for sportier models with increased anti wearing agents. As my car is now on a variable (10k) servicing AND knowing that semi syth does promote the build up of sludge deposits, is this 505 00 any good?? Seen lots of threads on other vwag forums saying they used the wrong oil, should have used the 01 variant etc. I've even read that its primarily for the diesel fraternity too.
SO
Going to do a swap tomorrow at GSF for a 5w/30. Should I stick with fuchs or is there something better for around the £25 mark. Titan Supersynth?? Because for the price of £12 for 5 litres, it seems like i'm buying the bargain basement oil. Regardless of how good he said it was. Silkolene partnership so must be good.
Deep breath..thanks chaps for any advise, but dont make it too long.....thems are for me!!
