Whats this reddish stuff !

found on my 2001 1.9 pd tdi awx engine.All this reddish dust what is it?

thats just very fine rust particles, your cam running gear is galvanised and where the belt sits this wears out, leaving the car sitting around for a while will cause a slight amount of surface rust and this is removed by the belt when you drive it.

the cam gear only starts to get like this if you dont drive your car much or if you've given the engine a wash!

are those cracks in your belt?

Better go and check mine,might need a clean.I hardly ever drive mine.

just check the belt, dont clean anything, its easyier cleaned when everything is off, the dust if very fine nothing to worry about unless your belt looks knackered!!!! i've changed the belt of a A2, golf mk4, volvo s80 with a vw engine, quite easy as long as you've got instuctions, the correct tools, and maindealer service bit,

a mate of mine got cheapy stuff from ECP and 2 weeks later the belt decided to loose 16 teeth.... nice

That belt aint new!, its covered in cracks and there gonna bite you in the *** if not sorted.
