The Big wheel debate - pics inside..

I Plan to carry out the following mods on my car, colour coding of bumpers, S4 upper and lower grills and 18 inch wheels. I don't know which wheels to choose. I have photoshopped all the possible wheels onto my modded car.

    Standard 16" Wheels

    S4 Avus Wheels

    RS6's

    A8 Wheels

    New RS4's

    Old RS4's

I'm swaying towards the S4 wheels as I had RS6's on my last A4 and fancy something a wee bit different. what do you guys think?

Get the S4 Avus's mate, they really suit the avant.

RS6's have been done to death and the A8's look better on VW's.

, RS6s are 10 a penny, as are the old RS4s. I do like the A8s though - you don't see may B6s with them on, as Smitch says, hey're usually reserved for VWs. Just a thought but what would the Lambo alloys look like (don't have Photoshop)?

If these are your only options, then I'd say go with the S4 alloys, they suit the avant perfectly. As nice as RS6's are, they are everywhere as are old RS4's. New RS4's are very nice and aren't too common just yet, but if I were you I'd get 19". Have a look at McGough's car, it's red with 19" new RS4 rims, looks excellent.

From looking at those pics, Id go with the S4's. I would of had S4's if I was having 18's but because they are not made in 19's I didnt bother as I was set on having 19's.

Im not a fan at all of the New rs4s Reps but on Kris's car they do look nice I must admit. I love the originals though, How they dip in towards the middle bore but they are Pretty rare and Bloody expensive.

S4 Avus look the best IMO
I've got the old RS4 18"s on mine and they look good but the Avus are better

I think the S4 rims look great and you dont see many of them out there. I've been looking at Gallardo reps online today but they are 19s not 18s...look great though. RS6's look very good but they are all over the place now.

I love the look of the polished A8's on the move as well, but its all spoiled when they stop. What about the 2 piece Mesh wheels offered as an option on new Audi's? I've seen some on fleabay before and they look great in the flesh.

I'm glad I've not really got any spare cash or it would do my head in looking for wheels...!!

I have both the old RS4's on my S4, and the new RS4's on my saloon. Although the new RS4's are reps I much prefer the design to the old RS4's personally...

    Alloys dilemma

    Hi,
I am new to mods so please be patient with me!

My 2001 A4 1.8T is due its MOT soon and the tyres are a bit thin. Instead of buying just new tyres I thought of getting new alloys & tyres together. Makes sense doesn't it?

I fancy some 18" old style RS4 alloys. On ebay they cost just under 500 and come equipped with 225/40/18 tyres

My existing alloys are 16" 5-spoke standard Audi alloys with 205/55/16 tyres.

    1. First question is what does 205/55/16 actually mean?
The 16 is the rim diameter in inches but what do 205 & 55 relate to?

    2. Second question! Would 18" RS4 alloys with 225/40/18 tyres be a suitable replacement for my existing wheels/tyres? Do I need to be careful about diameter or width, or weight or anything else?

    3. Finally, what effect would this mod have on handling, if any?

    Thanks,
    David

I have found the answer to my first question!
    It Width/Profile/Diameter (presumably in mm/mm/inches)

    1. 205 is the width of the tyre in mm, 55 is the height of the sidewall in a percentage of the width eg. 55% of 205mm = 112.75mm sidewall height, 16 in the wheel dia in inches.
    2. 18 inch with 225/45/R18 will fit fine, some people run slightly wider 235mm tyres.
    3. Shouldn't affect handling at all, some people notice reduced fuel consumption due to the extra weight of the wheels.

Hope that has answered your questions..

have a look at the photo of my last avant below. 19" polished RS4s , you cant beat them, you will probably agree. though out of your selection above, the S4s will give it a bit of exclusivity, especially in Amulet red!
My current avant (ebony) has rs4 18"s, and whilst it does lookgreat, it doesn'tlook WOW

    16" to 17" or 18"?

    I have 16" 5-spoke alloys on my A4 1.8T Sport.

Am intending to replace them but unsure of which size to go for - 17" or 18"?
Would there be much difference between 17" & 18" in terms of ride comfort, handling or fuel economy?

    Any advice appreciated. Thanks

Will the jump from 16" to 18" be noticeable in terms of handling/comfort?
Would a jump from 16" to 17" be a safe or a boring option?

    Are 18s OK?

New to these forums, and new to Audi - finally got the Avant I've always wanted!

I've also had the grey plastic trim colour-coded which really does make a huge difference to the look of the Avant, and would like to replace my original 16" wheels (exactly the same as technics100) with 18" ones.

However, I'm concerned the ride will be affected - my car's at the dealer for some warranty stuff and I've been given an A3 2.0 TDI S-Line with 18" RS6 wheels as a courtesy car (v.nice!) - but it's ride is really quite stiff and you feel all the bumps in the road. Is that an S-line thing, or would fitting 18" wheels to my SE Avant have a similar effect... neither my wife nor my new 3 week old daughter would appreciate being rattled about on the trip to Tesco!

Would value your experiences on this one technic100...........

IMO the S4 and RS6 ones are nice, but nothing really special.

    A8 look horrible on a B6

    B5 RS4 look dated.

B7 RS4 on the other hand are en vogue right now I would get those.

I haven't really noticed much difference changing upto the 18's, mine is the sport model and would have stiffer suspension. I put 18's on my last A4 on standard suspension and it honestly didn't make much difference, the only thing is that it looked too high... so I lowered it which made it stiffer and harsher

Sounds like I'll need suspension too...

Much appreciated - really good to know that it probably won't make too much of a difference to the ride on the stock SE suspension.

I had feared that to complete the look I might need to lower the car as well. Any recommendations on what to go for, or any good places to visit in Central Scotland? I guess I wouldn't know until the 18's were fitted how much lowering would be needed. I really don't fancy the 'stilts' look though - perhaps I should have bought a Sport model in the first place!! Is it worth fitting Audi 'original' sports suspension, or is this strictly a third-party vendors affair for the best value/performance....? I don't really want to hug the tarmac, I just want to get it to look 'right'. Could I lower the SE without stiffening things up to keep the relaxed ride....

..sorry for the newbie questions, but I reckoned this was the place to come for the bst advice from experienced owners!

I fitted eibachs to my last A4, they did make it a bit harsher, but thats the price to pay. They are progressive springs, which means they are soft when driving normally and harden up when cornering hard etc...

Thanks technics100! Hopefully I'll find a specialist close by who'd be kind enough to stick a set of 18's on my Avant and let me see how it looks and test the ride.... I like the sound of 'progressive' springs though.
