How do you know when your catalytic converter (cat) is NOOO GUD!!!

I've driven behind a mates VW GT-TDI whose CAT had blown and the first thing that hits you is the really strong smell, like seriously rotten eggs, I had to overtake him before I got sick!!!

i get a fumey smeel but nothing like rotten eggs! a smell ive smelt on most tdi's on tickover.
