Hi All,

First time I have posted here as I have generally read up on info in the background so hi all!

Yesterday just left my house in my 2001 A4 2.0 (B6) and the engine warning light started flashing and the idle became very lumpy. Nursed it home and plugged in the VAG-Com and Cylinder 3 is misfiring.

Anyway the service indicator has been telling me to book it in for 4 weeks now so thought I’d phone the local Audi dealership (Camberley Audi) and speak to them. Its just short of 80,000 miles on the clock. Now having spoken to them I have the following concerns.

1) Their hourly labour rate is £99.50!! (I’m in the wrong job)
2) They have advised that the cambelt will need changing at the same time - £535 all inc
3) Long Life service £360 all inc

My main concern is the cambelt change as my service book says this need to be done at 115,000 miles. So why are they saying 80,000. I did query this but no answer could be given for this discrepency.

Can anyone shed any light on the cambelt issue?

Also has anyone had any experience with Camberley Audi and can give their opinion?

Is the misfiring likely to be spark plug, lead or coil pack. If it is the coil pack, I have read that these are generally faulty, should I have to pay?

Anyone know of an Audi Specialist in the area or who could recommend a good mechanic that will do Audi’s with more sensible hourly labour rates.

Questions, questions, questions!! ;o)

Thanks

Cambelt is 80k or ideally before. The 115k is kilometers.
No way get it done at a dealership, find a good specialist and they will be half the price (£45 per hour) but still use all OEM parts. Specialist service history is as good if not better than FASH. Specialists tend to be more thorough and still have a pasion for doing a good job. You won't get either at a dealership.
If the coilpack is gone then it'll be almost undriveable, with literally no 3rd cylinder at all. Not just a misfire, the whole car will shake on idle.

Thanks for the response and advise. I will shop around, have found an Audi Specialist in the area and will call them Monday to get some quotes. It is definitely undriveable at the moment, the whole car shudders violently so I would assume as you say it is not just misfiring, there is no 3rd cylinder.

My service manual definitely says:

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Every 180,000 Km (115,000 miles)

  • Toothed belt for camshaft drive replaced (4 cylinder 5v 1.8ltr petrol engines)1)
  • Toothed belt for camshaft drive replaced (4 cylinder 5v 2.0 ltr petrol engines)
1 - Must be changed more frequently on certain models; please ask your Audi dealer for details

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To be honest I am not against having it done at 80,000 miles as I wouldn't want to leave it and risk the engine but there does seem to be a discrepency between what the service manual says and what the dealership says.

thanks

Audi revised this a while back, but didn't inform anybody. It's definately 80k or 5 years, so either way you need to get it done.

just had my 2.4 v6 serviced at stoke audi £260 for longlife service and b/f change cambelt was £330 + 40 for water pump:rockwoot: speak to andrew

DON'T LET AUDI ANYWHERE NEAR YOUR CAMBELT OR WATER PUMP!

Sorry for the shouting but they are rip off merchants, I got my cambelt and water pump done by a local specialist for £100. I bought the parts from German Swedish for £45 and labour was £100 = £145.

Definitely get it done now, it's the recommended interval and if the belt snaps you're looking at repair bills in the £1000's.

Looks like you may need a new coilpack too, these are around £80 I think.

I'd definately look around my local dealer charges £119 an hour! There does seem to be a lot of confusion about ambelt replacement times, but if your not sure I'd get it done.
