Vibration ( massage chair)

Hi, Could anyone tell me if they have the same problem that i am experiencing, or advise what it could be ? I have a 2004 A4 130 sport multitronic with 20,000 miles on the clock. (owned from new with fsh)
At around 1200-1300 rpm i get a vibration that can be felt through the steering wheel and also it can be felt through the seat, it is not a rattle. it is only there when your foot is on the accelerator, it do'es not do it on over-run so balancing is not the cause.
An Audi technician has been in the car & felt the vibration & agrees that it is not normal to do it, after diagnosing a d.i.s.s. report, Audi technical say it is a characteristic of the car.....after i told them i dont accept there findings and the car has not always done it, and tell the service manager that i will take it further, they send a master technician for a road test & he say's that the vibration can be felt through out the dashboard & seat on passenger side aswell but has no idea what it could be?
It is due to go to the dealer 26/03 for investigation's & they want it for at least a week.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated..........

I had the same problem with my A4Q 3.0 L. Tiptronic 02 plate.
My vibration could only be felt through the front passenger seat and, to be fair, was only really noticable when abroad and on smoother roads. My car had travelled some 30k miles since new and was still on original tyres with good tread left (4mm or so).

That said, the problem was the tyres which had lost some flexibilty and a couple, shape. A new set all round cured the problem, though I still remain a tad paranoid about it and spend much of my time holding the top of the passenger seat to see if it has returned.

I should add that the wheel balance remain OK on all 4 wheels as I had that checked before changing.

Might be worth considering, good luck.

In the past when I have been told that so and so is a characteristic, I had a Rover once that jumped out of gear, I usually ask for the manufacturer to put that in writing to me, as I am sure the motoring press would be pleased to learn that.

" This car has been designed to jump out of gear from time to time to heighten the driving experience" would make an interesting opening line to a road test!!

I also have heard that low tread on the tyres could be a problem as was the case with a friends cabrolet, i replaced & balanced wheels & tyres 2000 miles ago.

I had a similar problem with my 2.0FSI multitronic, had the wheels balanced, four wheel tracking done and steering geometry checked by an Audi dealer. Still had the vibration. So had it all done again by an independent specialist as I was convinced something was out of true. Still no improvement. A few weeks later replaced the rear tyres; vibration instantly disappeard and has not re-appeared.
So moral of the story, if funds allow try replacing the rear tyres. Might do the trick.

Took car into Doncaster Audi today, they have given me a A3 2.0 T until friday, will let you know what the outcome/findings are......

A little off topic but out of curiosity how does the A3 compare to your A4??

I've had a 2.0TDi Sportback S-line for 10 days or so now and compared to my Avant its like a tractor, quite loud. I'm thinking they cant all be like that surely.

Hi, The A3 is quite responsive but there is a lot more road noise than in my A4, overall we think it is a great car & are considering exchanging the wifes car for one, she is impressed & thinks she would suit one......

Just an update, Audi still have my car ''3 weeks'' now, got a courtesy call from service manager on thurs to say that they are still trying to solve the problem & have now got a donor car so they can remove bits from to put on my car to find the problem ???? on the up side, The A3 has gone back & been replaced with a brand new A4 with 50 miles on the clock....

keep us informed, i have a 2004 tdi sport avant which is doing the same thing on acceleration from a standstill and also when accelerating out of a corner/turn. for your info i have just replaced m standard 17inch kraft alloys with new 18inch rs6 alloys and new tyres, the problem is still there and is no better or worse?????????

Got a phone call from Doncaster Audi yesterday, just an update they said, we have found a problem with your car, the compresion is low, this is causing us some concern? We have removed the cylinder head & found that the injectors have been moving. We have now ordered a new cylinder head for you & it should be here on monday.
When it is fitted, we will test drive the car & let you know the results as & when. (they will have had my car 4 weeks)

I will let you know when i find anything out...............

Back again, just had an update from the dealer, They have fitted new cylinder head & the vibration problem is still there.
they have contacted Audi UK & Audi Germany, Both agree that what has been done is the right thing to have done but now i have got a New Gearbox on its way from Germany(Multitronic). It wont arrive untill tuesday, as usual, i'll let you know as & when....................

Just an update, Had new gearbox fitted, NO DIFFERENCE, had 2 suspension arms fitted NO DIFFERENCE, going in on monday to have a new sub-frame fitted, getting well & truly ****** off now.

mine went back to the dealers and had a new 7 plate clutch pack fitted to the gearbox as apparently the six pack that was fitted as new can not cope with the gearbox and so it starts to judder, i've had mine back 3 weeks now and seems to be fine. i would get manual next time though

CONFIRMED, I am now ###### off. New subframe fitted and car booked into dealers next wed, having courtesy car again until problem fixed.(they dont know whats wrong)
