    Painting Lowers

I want to colour code the lowers on my 02 A4 so went to a bodyshop to get a quote but said they couldnt give me a guarantee on the work as the paint would eventualy flake off as it wouldnt 'take' to the plastic lowers.

Now i know other people on here have had it done so i would like to know if you have had any flaking and what prosess the bodyshop went through to ensure it didnt flake before i go and get another quote

    TIA

Depends what finish you original parts have???

i got the S-line kit which has a smooth finish, then plastic prime and paint, then clear!

if you have a rough finished bumper then the plastic will not allow the primer to key properly and will flake off- but it can be done if care is taken and the right technique, and should last years!

Hi mate, My lower parts were painted before I put my Kit on and my cousin sprayed it no probs, He put something on as an undercoat before but said he didnt really need to do so, it was just a safety measure due to stone chips!!!

I have heard of what they are saying though, I used to work for Ford many years ago and it was our policy to warn customers that this can happen just incase of any future comebacks.

Just tell them to shut it and do what they are getting paid for.

I painted the lowers on my Denim Blue A4 myself and it completely transformed the cars looks. The job itself wasn't too hard, and I got all the spray from paints4u.com (who colour match). If you want the paint to stick properly on the bumper, first of all sand it down with fine sandpaper and then spray some adhesive promoter before applying basecoat and clearcoat. If you spray a good 3 layers of lacquer over the basecoat, the paintwork should stay on the bumper.

I was quoted 350 today to paint the grey parts to match the car. my Painter (who fixed all the cars i crashed when i was younger) told me that if the parts are smooth it will work and they are, so i trust him to get it right. Supposidly it is a whole days labour plus lots of plastisiser?

I painted the lowers on my old S2 Avant. They were heavely textured. It's all about the preperation. I spent a good long time on degreasing the surface (steam cleaners work well) as it probably had years of back to black type product on it. I then sanded the textured surface as much as I could and thoroughly cleaned again with celulose thinners. A decent quality plastic primer and bobs your uncle.

I used a celulose paint with a compressor but you can get the matched paint in aeorsols.

Like people say, it's worth it, it'll look great.

Make sure they know what sort of job you want doing. It's far better paying a bit more to get the job done right, by someone you feel comfortable with.
