Guys,

After months of searching for the right one, i've finally bought a 2003 B6 S4 Avant in Dolphin Grey. The cars pretty much immaculate and with stupidly low mileage, one owner and a full Audi history.

The only thing is, over the last couple of mornings i've noticed it makes a slightly strange noise when the engine's cold and you press the throttle. The best description of it is, a whine or whistle (maybe a belt slipping?) that happens between 1-4K revs. Once the engine warms up (after 5 mins or so) it dissappears!

I'm hoping this is just something minor on an otherwise perfect car!?

Anyone have any ideas what it may be? Has anyone else experienced this this?

Jay

That'll be the belt tensioner. There was a technical bulletin floating about somewhere. Some S4 owners on Tyresmoke.net have more detailed information.

After a bit more research, that's what it sounds like to me. There is aparently an AUDI technical service bulletin that describes the problem and how to rectify it, but the website that hosts it http://www.b6s4.com/ seems to be not working.

Does anyone have a copy knocking around? The origional link was
http://b6s4.com/audi/tsb/EngineWhineTSB.pdf

The other thing I've read (which i'll check when I get home) is to keep an eye on the Power Steering fluid level, as the S4 can get through it pretty quickly and when it's low it can lead to a few strange noises.

could also be the auxillary air pump (the b5 s4 auto defo has one not sure about yours) that is used to save the cats on cold starts.
