Ive just bought an A4 1.8T Quattro and when excelerating hard in first and second I somtimes fell a few little knocks coming through the car. It doesnt happen all the time but Im finding it quite worrying. Ive spoke to my mechanic who hasnt had a chance to look at it but said it could be a number of things. Hes not too familiar with this car and said the 4wd might not be allways on and the knock may be the 4wd engaging. Can anyone tell me if the 4wd is allways on or does it cick in at a certain speed like some other 4wds? Does this sound like something that should be happeing with this car or is something amiss?

Thanks for the help.

Pete.

4wd is allways on, mine does the same, it feels as if the quattro is taking up slack? does that sound like what it is?

Happens mostly in 1st and 2nd gear, my old b5 quattro never did it, but my B6 1.8tq does.

I don't worry about it :)

The best way I can describe it Ronny is it feels like ive just drove over a thin cable on hard susspension, if that makes any sense. I feel anything from 1 to 4 little knocks accelerating through first and second but have never noticed it in any other gear, sometimes I dont feel it at all. Its not a hard knock but its just something Im not used to and after having loads of trouble with my last car (A3) Im not realy enjoying this one as much as I should.

Cheers for the help.

Pete.

hmm, well the 4wd system on the A4 is different then the A3, it's Torsen and is perm on, mine just feels like a slight judder when you accelerate in gears, but I have put some serious miles on my A4, it does not really concern me much but I should get it looked it.

If it happens when you accelerate and you can feel it through the car, is does sound like a 4wd issue, mine I put down to wear on the propshaft, and mine defo feels like it's taking up slack.

Sorry i cant be of more help

Thanks anyways ronny, Ill get it in to the garage and let him have a look at it. Its probably nothing but after my problems with the last one Ive got a real case of car paranoia. The slightest litlle bump or rattle makes me worry.

Cheers!

Bit of a follow up on this Ronny, Ive had it in to one garage who I must say has given me some terrible advice in the past and he said his initial thoughts were it was the rear diff. Now Ive been reading a bit about the torsen diff and apparently there nearly indistructable, do you know anything about the torsen being good, bad etc?

Im leaning/hoping more towards CV joints or propshaft, Ive had it on the ramps and there is about 3/4 of an inch rotational play in the propshaft, should that be there?

Anyways ive got it booked into a specialist on tuesday but just looking to go armed with a bit more info so I dont get stitched up like last time?

Cheers for the help.
