    2.5TDi would you buy one?

Looking around for another A4 to add to the fleet, and there is a 2.5TDi that is close to me for sale. The thing that is putting me off these cars is the fuel pump & the cams, is there anything else they are prone to suffer with that is going to cost ££££ just for the parts?

Also what the MPG like for these cars?

Cams on B series engines (BAU/BDG/BDH) don't wear but they can fail damaging the engine when the rings on them snap. Also injector pumps are the latest revision and i did not came across ANY 2004-2005 with a faulty pump as yet ! In my opinion is a better and much more solid alternative to the 2.0Tdi or 1.8T and it has a smooth torque curve and better fuel economy than either engine 45Mpg average is easy ! There's more stuff to go wrong on the 2.0Tdi: oil pumps, injectors, EGR valves, etc. than on the 2.5Tdi + it's a much more rewarding engine- with a remap it goes to 200Bhp without detrimental fuel consumption...It's also Euro4 so emissions are low + tax is £270 a year. In my case a 2.5 tdi is cheaper to insure than a 1.9Tdi...same car, same model !

Some v6 tdi and 1.8Tqs are over 225g of CO2/Km and the road tax is 495 quid, makes you want to buy and drive a v8 ! My s4 tax is also 270 quid a year...

I'd have another one tomorrow. I'd want it sub 100k and I'd spend £500 getting all the timing gear exchanged etc right away. And keep £1k in the bank for when the fuel pump goes.

I've had both engines, the V6 walks all over the 1.9 as is worth every penny.

And another £350-£400 for a Meyle or Lemforder front suspension refresh on +100k cars.

My early 2001 one of the 1st off the production line 2.5 TDI has had cam issues and a fuel pump issue, but TBH its like all cars, they all have isses depending on how they are serviced and driven, I'd buy another 2.5TDI, In fact I'm now thinking about getting a 2.5TDI A4 Avant Quattro S-Line. more news as it comes,

The problem is if I get an early model then it would always been in the back of my mind about the fuel pump & cams and mentally putting aside £2K to get the car fixed, so if it's an early model then it would need to be cheap. The 1.9 does not have these problems and I'm not bothered about the extra performance, I spend most of my life on motorways so just looking a TDi Quattro Avant as I've already got 2 front wheel drive cars an fancy getting a Quattro again.

My A6 is a 1.9 AVF and it's surprisingly capable. It has none the V6's character, but has a surprising turn of speed even in the 6. I doubt you'd be disappointed in it if you're not after the enhanced performance.

You know they never made a B6 2.5 S-Line I'm sure, did you mean B7?

I would get a c5 a6 but most might not like it's barge like road holding, however fresh shocks and eibach springs will sort it out. If you preffer the b6 then i would buy late BDH quattro and throw larger nozzles and a hybrid 2056 turbo + early 2001 alloy intercoolers, that will wake up the old girl so much you would not want another car, ever. I bought a b6 s4 supposedly mapped to 370-380 Bhp, it has a cone filter and new coils + milltek decat pipes, the v6 tdi will keep up with it no problem ! A lousy 12 year old diesel vs. a highly strung v8 petrol...'nuff said !

Guys......I don't want to hijack the thread but "£350-£400 for a Meyle or Lemforder front suspension refresh".....is an indi likley to charge a days labour to fit these?? I can't do them myself.

B5NUT - My 2.5TDI QS is the best pound-for-pound car i've owned among some much more expensive stuff. Mine is a 2001 (AKE engine) now on 192k. The pump was replaced by the previous owner and it's been serviced regularly (not longlife) and the cams are fine apparently.

I have driven today a forum member's allroad 2.7TT and to be honest my diesel allroad would keep up with it no problem ! The 3.0tdi is a good engine, however the electric handbrake and the styling don't do it for me...Glad you got it for a good price, they can be expensive to maintain...
