    Broken A4 cab

    Hi

I purchased an A4 6 months ago that I assumed was a good runner, the engine works fine but 2 weeks after i bought the car i started to have issues with the car.

Currently the roof will not go down along with the windows being stuck in place 3/4 of the way down. when I flip the switch nothing happens other than the warning light coming up on the dash. The roof will literally not move.

Alongisde the above issue the handle of the glove box is broken and more often than not creates a sound i can only describe as a blender going off in the glove box.

thirdly, the alarm constantly goes off for no reason and the central locking is not working either.

I tried to take the car back to the dealer but he wont take it back despite him giving me a guarantee and the court ordering him to refund me the money. the only option i can see i have is to just repair the car and get on with it.

I have taken the car to 2 diagnostic garages and they both cant fix it, they say i need a new CCU. Audi want to charge £350 for the CCU plus the usual audi hourly rate coming in at nearly £1400.

if anyone can offer any advise I would be most greatful

    thank you

Assuming you have given up on the dealer you bought the car from then I would find a recommended audi sspecialist and get the car scanned for faults then you can see where you stand. Might be with also checking for damp especially under the front passenger seat as ths is where one of the main computers lives. Check the plenum chamber isn't full of water and remove the rubber grommets anyway of ther are still at the bottom of the chamber.

    where to start
first for the roof id say its the roof ecu behind the drivers rear door panel
have you dont a manual reset yet ?
the noise behind the glove box is prob a stuck flap motor easy repair to do
the alarm could be a ****ed back up battery
and have you tried to resync the c locking
put key in ignition turn on dont start press lock then unlock and then remove key and try
does the c locking work from the button on the drivers door ?

as in my post the roof ecu is behind the drivers side passanger door panel

you will have instructions for roof reset in the hand book that came with your car or google

the alarm siren has a back up battery built in its normaly in the front wheel arch on a cab

Ok so I just did the manual reset and it didn't work. The back windows didn't drop when I did this they stayed where they were.

The windows/ roof switch just don't seem to do anything or respond.

I checked for damp in the passenger footwell etc and it seemed to be ok.

Tried the key in the ignition swell which also didn't help with the locking, perhaps battery is gone in the key ?

    Next step ?

I think next step would be to scan for faults.

Because he is a dodgey trader. The court may have ordered him to pay the money but to enforce the debt a bailiff must attend his premises and recover the goods.

As it was a used car garage none of the cars are in the sellers name so technically the bailiff cant take the goods as they do not belong to the trader. Its quite legally complicated which basically ends with the person breaking the law being protected by the law.

I had a diagnostic check done a few weeks ago and faults are as follows

    auto roof faults

1996 - convertible top lock switch
    01995 convertible top lock switch
01317 control module in instrument cluster
01330 central control module fpr centrsl convenience
01331 door control module, driver side
    01332 door control, passenger side
    01334 door control, rear right
    01333 door controlrear left
00466 control module for steering column electrics
00470 combination comfort databus in single wire
    00532 supply voltage b+
    02023 terminal 87

all faults above show either implausible signal or no signal/communications

there are other faults with engine, abs brakes, HVAC, Instruments and entry assist. i can list these if you need me to as well ? there are alot.

    thanks

That sucks big time! I once had a car seized by the police because it was stolen. Stolen plates had been fitted and they'd put an MOT on it then sold it to my dad for my 18th birthday (before the days of the MOT databases, etc). Not even a proper ringer because I'd checked the VIN plates etc. Dealer disappeared and my dad never got the money back and insurance company, who had already paid out on the car, never offered me a buy-back. I did get a full page spread in the local rag which got me free sympathy beers all night in my local!

You really need to clear the faults then rescan to see which ones persist. A lot of them could have been caused by a duff battery, which you have already changed.

Put a request out for a VCDS forum member in your area to assist. If you can pinpoint specific faults then you can avoid repeated scanning and fault diagnosis fees at a garage.

Sorry I am new to this forum and dont know what a VCDS member is ??

Ive only had one audi before and it was an A5, amazing car and never had an issue. i thought this one would be the same and bought into the 'audi build quality' hype but seems i got bitten this time.

VCDS is a VAG specific diagnosis tool provided by Ross Tech. It can do various things such as read and clear fault codes and make functional changes. VCDS Lite (limited features) can be downloaded for free from the website and used with "copy" leads from ebay (approx £20-£30). Registering VCDS Lite gives greater functionality and cost £68. A full, official setup cost about £250 and a member of this forum, NHN, is a supplier.

Here's a thread on this forum which maps all the full VCDS members. Hopefully, there's someone in your area who can help out.

Ok. So based on the faults and codes described, it does look as though it's a network error and some physical faults (roof switches). Apologies if I'm teaching to such eggs, but most if not all new cars (yours included) run internal networks (CANbus) in place of the old switch and wire.

Unfortunately from time to time these networks can and do fall over. Or if the have any water in connectors etc... Realistically you need to find a good auto spark that understands newer vehicles (unfortunately a lot dont)...

Only thing I can directly suggest is trying unplugging various units (cluster, heater control, etc) and see if there's any improvement.

Must ask, did you note the fault codes and then clear them and rescan ? Otherwise you will be looking for faults that might not actually be there...

Because it is THE most overused statement in forces training! And just plain nonsense in my opinion. If you're instructing then sometimes you will state the obvious to some people, some of the time...don't be apologising for it, it's your job! Rant over

    hello,

just for completeness I thought I would post what the issue was.

I took the car to an audi non main dealer garage who assessed the issue for me.

it was a CCU that was flooded due to a blocked hose from the air con unit. the water caused the unit to fry and then intern cause the electrical issues.

£705.64 will fix this issue !

So if anyone has the above issues, think about checking the CCU

    Cheers
