2.5tdi High milers 300,000 thou plus??

After much reading of the forum lately was slightly concerned after reading of a few reports of members beloved 2.5tdi engine letting go with what I would consider relatively lowish miles (100/150thou). Yes I know there will be over abused cars and this would be quite normal to hear of engines going "basket case"!

My B6 2.5 tdi sport now has 140 thou behind her now and was bought with a full Audi service. I have kept on top of my services and have received excellent reliability.

So my question to members with the 2.5tdi engine is who's got the biggest mileage on the original engine. Hoping there are some big milers out there considering the 1.9tdi's can easily with care get to the quarter million mark.

I've heard of some approaching 250k but my own is on 187K and still going strong. It's very easy to get 'high-mileage hypochondria' especially when you find some horror stories on forums. I've become more relaxed about it now. I'll just keep maintaining and enjoying it I think.

LOL, I know what you mean. I have toyed with the idea of getting a 3.0tdi instead and changing my car. I did however get to test drive a A5 3.tdi quattro recently and I came away quite surprised on how well my 2.5tdi 180 sport quattro held her own. Mine has been remapped mind you and I felt that the low down torque was a bit better. With that in mind I'm more convinced that it's worth holding on to the B6 and would like some high miler reports to confirm this.

There are some very satisfied 2.5 B6 owners on the forum who are able to custom there 2.5's to easily compare with the 3.0tdi and there are even reports that the 2.5 is a more basic reliable unit when in the right hands

I have seen a few with 250-300k and one taxi with 440k, they were early c5 a6 though. I also had a 220k a4 b6 i bought with a broken cambelt and own few 180-190k myself ! The 3.0 Tdi is a good lump let down by the drive chains, manifold flaps and injectors. I would not care much about the mileage if rest of the car is tidy and it drives right, only issues is injector pump brains let go but they are cheap to repair now 500-700 from specialists !
I also happen to own fjtwelve's old audi a6 which he spent thousands tuning it, running a little more power than standard !

    Hi Adams24,

Cheers for the reply. Should be right for a while yet then. Got you marked down for a t/belt change when mines due if your up for it.
Like to deal with someone who lives and breaths his Audi's and" walks the talk".

Would be good to talk to you one day if I was to consider pumping up the hp to the 250/280 mark. I believe this would include injectors, turbo and another remap. Don't need a rocket just sensible reliable mods at the right money of course.

Mine went pop at 128k. The reason was at the 80k timing belt change (prior to my ownership) the "Specialist" who did it, didn't replace the timing belt tensioner pulley, instead choosing to do an inspection. I'm sure it looked fine at 80k, but by 128 had spun it's last so disintegrated and the belt skipped four teeth. The only blame there lies with the Specialist for cutting corners, and it was most definitely false economy, I can't blame the engine for that. The 2.5's are pretty tough in my experience, but they don't bear fools gladly when it comes to poor servicing.

It's a tough choice, do you pay to have the work done properly yourself when you buy a secondhand car? Or do you rely on trust that the timing belt change was done properly in the first place?

That was a bummer quattrojames and as you said no fault of the engine. That type of situation can happen to all of us on a secondhand car with so called professional work carried out on them.

I was checking through my service history the other day as I am getting the water temp reading problem. I found the receipt and all the work and parts were correct except the thermostat. When I bought the car I didn't know that it's a no brainer to replace the thermostat at the same time. I'm sure it's the cts though, I've fault code 18062 which indicates problems with the cts. I get early heat and decent heater in the car. If I do get problems in between cam belts change It's front off all for a £15 part!

Fair play mate and that's what you want! I bet you get many more miles too, the 1.9 tdi is well reliable when looked after.

I get 44 mpg ...mine's the 130 bhp...It's not as good as some, but it's not sooo bad. But the engine is so smooth....and the gearbox too. I still can do 1 finger gear changes! These cars are built so well. I doubt i'll have any other type of car again!

Just to comment on service history, I think that dealer servicing is no where near as good as a good independent. I had issues with my viscous fan being loctited on by a main dealer. Just ask Adamss24! (big THANKS!)

Yes, in wesmaster case the only way i could get the viscous fan off was by removing it together with the pulley carrier, even heat did not get it off ! The v6 tdi engine can give you a lot of grief if it was on longlife servicing intervals !

FJTwelve's old a6 is about 250k, been rebuilt twice due to muppets working on engine and cutting corners...

I have a 163bhp with no history whatsoever that I just remapped myself to 190bhp and at 200k it pulls like a train! It looks to have a new turbo on here though?
And she does sound rattly when cold starting for 30 seconds or so but ticks over nicely enough thereafter..

Mine is sitting at 141,000 miles now.
Purchased at 119,000 miles last year - full Audi service history.

Unfortunatley I did have to spend £1200 on the engine due to the cams becoming worn.
That £1200 did include belts with all tensioners and pulleys.

After this work, I would think the engine would have no reason to give up on me, as she is serviced regularly (fresh oil every 6,000 miles). I definatley aim to hit the 200,000 mile mark with this car - maybe beyond.

Good luck Alex I'm sure now the top end is sound you'll get big miles out of your car especially when you will be servicing it yourself.

Bought mine 2 years ago with 117,000 also with full Audi service history, hope not to get worn cams coming along soon. I am targeting 250/300 thou currently 146 thou and pulling like a train.

Did your car have any extended service intervals?

Yep, it was on the the long-life service - which is what killed the cams.

I checked the service history book the other day - I kid you not, the first oil change it had was @ 32,000 miles with the 2nd being at 64,000 miles.

That's scandalous really and your car is classed as having a full Audi history too! Luckily my service intervals have all been 10,000 max and below so fingers crossed on the cams!

Yep ! I keep telling folk that the "longlife" servicing should be called "shortlife" servicing ! Stick to using a good synthetic 5w40 oil and change every year or 6k and you will have no trouble with the car engine wise ! Here's a clip of the old barge doing a quick run after i fitted a new hybrid turbo, by the way John, pardon me for the hijack ! Could not drive it too fast as the streets were busy today...

Stop tempting me with that Hybrid turbo Chris, I'm glad I didn't get that chance to have a spin in Martins car I'd have given you a deposit for that hybrid turbo there and then!. Sensible head back on again if I do get any signs of the need to repair or replace my original turbo I will get a hybrid turbo just for the fun of it, the car at the moment though is a joy to drive at present.

Hi John, it's Martin's old a6, it's so fast it frightens me sometimes ! I have raced a mate with a b7 rs4 saloon and it wasn't much faster than me, if it wasn't for me loosing time up-shifting then it would have been too close to judge which is the winner ! He wasn't too happy ...

It's down to the customer if they want just the Belt changing the price of a kit usually puts them off but like you say James comes back to bite you on the arse in the end, the amount we have done just belts as the customer won't pay for a kit, but we warn them and the problems that may lie ahead, it's usually the bolt for the tensioner what fails
