EPC & engine management lights on - help!

Hi All,

Long time lurker, first time post.

Car is a 2002 A4 1.8T (163)

Upon starting up today, my EPC light and Engine Management light are both on. Tried to drive the car forwards and it has very little in the way of power.

I recently had the car serviced at Russell Automotive Centre (Russell Automotive Centre - The Audi, VW, Seat, Skoda and Bentley specialist) and have also changed all four coil packs so I know it's not those at fault.

Upon doing a search, everything seems to point to a 'crank sensor' - which as far as I can see, is somewhere between £50 and £130 (depending on who you ask).

I'm happy to get this done but my trouble is actually getting the car to a garage, as I'm not sure if I can even drive it like it is at the moment - it seems to be in 'limp' mode.

I'm based in South London - between Clapham and Wandsworth Commons.

A) Does anyone know a decent Audi mobile mechanic (I've searched long and hard on the web and on the forums but with little joy)
B) Is it ok to drive the car to get it to a garage - even when in limp mode like this? (I'm presuming no)

Does anyone who's handy with Audi's live in my vicinity, or know someone who is - will happily pay.

The first thing you want to do is get the car scanned for faults for a better idea as sometimes the symptoms can be the same for other things

As already said mate, ideally you need the car scanned, there is a VCDS map on ASN giving the locations of members with the ability and who are willing to scan. Have a look maybe to see if anyone is nearby to you and ask if they can help you out.

Also / Or, try giving Audi a call and ask a service advisor if the car is able to be driven in to them in its current state and describe all the symptoms and fault lights on the dash. Obviously once you've been told either way, take it where you like whether it be recovered or under its own steam.

So to update, I started the car this weekend (after charging from a flat battery) and the lights were all out - drove fine. Really bizarre.


I'm not one to tempt fate, so on the basis that it will probably happen again and on the recommendation of loads of people on here, I've taken it to Dave and Linsey - Volksautos in Sutton for Dave to have a look at it. Hopefully it's just an iffy sensor but I totally trust them to remedy it based on the feedback they seem to have on the forums I've read.
