as the title suggests, having my car vagcom'ed tomorrow morn, but i think the problem with my car is either diesel pump out of sync if possible or timing is out in some way.

see my previous topic for symptoms

most stuff has now been ruled out, but although i've been told the timing has been checked twice i'm just not sure.

one of my work collegues today mentioned to me that my audi sounds like a tractor.

There's no diesel pump on your engine, each injector is a mini pump on it's own- google Pumpe Duse for images and explanations. You cannot set the timing wrong on the pd lump without valve to piston contact however you can adjust the "syncro angle" on the camshaft. You need registered vag com/VCDS for that. Too far either way and the engine won't start. If your engine sounds coarse then i suggest you remove the rocker cover and inspect the camshaft and lifters for wear due to wrong grade of oil used !

Check the synchro angle in engine module group 4 it should be as close to zero as possible
