I never 'believed' in remapping, The car came from the factory with 'x' amount of power for a reason longativity, in my opinion

Simply remapping an ECU shouldn't to that damage, what you are seeing is excess current frying your unit. Time for small claims if they don't pay up for a fix.

Ouch! as someone that's considering a remap for economical gain ..this sucks.

What do they intend to do to rectify, or is it at your own risk? Was it a company advertised on ASN?

It's odd that he went down that route. As far as i'm aware all the B6 models can be remapped by a flash. Early B5 models had to be physically chipped or the ECU having a socket fitted to take a replacement chip.

Sounds like a bit of a cowboy to me.

OMG. My son could de solder better than that.

As stated, why he was removing that chip, god only knows. Also you should have a port flashable ECU so a decent tuner should not have needed to open the ecu and desolder the chip. Thats sub 1999 technology

Im really confused as to why he de-soldered and then re-soldered the chip back onto the board. As someone said its only when bench mapping (boot mode) that you have to get to the ECU itself. Sounds real dodgy to me

Hi shane, as others have said, you ought to name and shame.

This ECU should never have needed to be dissasembled im led to believe, and the poor attempt at working on it shows real incompetance (just like my spelling!)

As we discovered tonight, and rosstech actually mailed me on the way home, the ecu is immo iii, and youll need to get the SKC code from both ECU's to code it in. IMO you should be asking the guy who did this to supply a new ECU, probably from a main dealer.

A brand new A4 (B8) ECU from TPS is approx £800 (rough guide for you) and its them that supply Audi. It will then have to be coded online and live to embed the immobiliser codes. If your old ECU isn't knackered then you may not have to go to the dealer for this. Just to give you a heads up this kind of thing happened to a customer of mine where someone had attempted to do a quick flash and it went wrong. Beware as the main dealer in Edinburgh and Glasgow refused to code and fit the new ECU to his car after I had it delivered to me and I could only find one place in Glasgow that would fit and code it which cost him an additional £100.....and that was A for Audi. I phoned up several stealers and the reply was the same that they wouldn't touch it as they hadn't diagnosed the problem even though the ECU was removed and the new one ready to fit and code.

Could a new clock/key/ecu be fitted without too much hassle? A set with known codes from the same car.
As the breaker you bought the replacement ecu from told you it would be an easy job to fit and no SKC was needed id suggest sending it back as unfit for purpose/not as described. You could probably buy a whole set of clocks/ecu/keys from another car for that money.

Can anyone confirm if vagtacho will read the doner ecu SKC in the car or just the cluster? pm will do.

Just to agree with what's already been said, this guy didn't have a scooby what he was doing. This shouldn't put you off remaps though, just him.

I hope you get paid for your expenses.

Next time ask others on a forum like this... There's plenty of well known mappers out there that we would all expertly give our opinions if we've used them.. This bloke obviously don't touch many audis... Simply plug and play and most just add a generic map over your existing map unless its a custom map... But I'd of put a thread in here stating you want a map your from a said area can anyone recommend anybody local.. I'm sure there would be 2-3 options

Threads like this make my **** itch.

Lack of research, and taking your vehicle to a monkey are the issue here. If you actually had it remapped by a reputable company it would have been spot on and you wouldn't have had any issues.

Your stupidity will stop others making their vehicle perform the way it should have from the factory. This thread; all ********.

This should serve as a lesson to everybody; do your research before blindly letting somebody touch your ecu.

So he was trying to "chip" it as opposed to re-mapping it?

I was going to say... if he was re-mapping using a cable that would be some serious short/over voltage.

But since its soldering then obviously that's the problem here - as others have said, it is worthwhile going to a reputable company where your ECU is concerned - even a single dodgy figure / check-sum in a map can wreak havoc.

Big fish tuning by any chance, in stokesly? If so, oh dear avoid like the plague. They apparently don't make any of there maps there all generic cow crap, and they have no idea what they are doing, anyone associated with them I wouldn't let touch my car.

    Sad to see

Well I can vouch not all tuners work like this, the mapping that we offer doesnt usually mean removing the ECU

If there is anything I can do to help please feel free to ask.

I work in the Electronics industry and I think that looks repairable, it looks like he tried to remove it by mashing a soldering iron in to the join and quickly pull the legs up (not the way to do it) As long as the pads arent too damaged and too many lifted it should be a relatively simple repair

    Also, this made me chuckle:
