Always trust dealers diagnostics?

As some of you are aware ive had my cvt diagnosed as faluty, needs a new clutch pack.
However, it was slightly colder this morning but not alot and my car didnt play up at all on both journeys. Now normally i get a third of the way and and it would play up like hell, so is it worth trusting what you get told ?
For example, he said it was gone as that was what the jerk was, but if it did in reverse then the trottle body is playing up and not the box.............how could that be so far apart in dianostic terms
Im new to audis so have no idea on what else the problem so if anybody has any ideas then that qould be great.

Change the gearbox fluid with genuine VAG ATF.

It's a very common issue with the multitronice box's. It's worth doing your research online and finding a specialist in those gearboxes to discuss the symptoms with.

Found one specalist who said he would never go inside and replace things on a cvt. only replace the full box. That would be 2.5k !!
He said that not worth recon or returning only ever putting a whole new one in

Have you tried changing the transmission fluid? - sometimes the simplest of things can cause mayhem.

It depends on how much you trust them - some dealers usually prefer to replace a whole unit as opposed to digging down and finding out exactly where the issue is.
For example a friend of mine had a problem with a Haldex differential on his Volvo - the dealer wanted to replace the complete differential, but after my friend dug down he found the exact issue was a pressure sensor inside the Haldex, which he managed to replace himself for £95.

I used to be a fleet manager & my experience with main dealers was horrific. Never trusted main dealers since, they rarely repair anything just fit new parts.
Change the transmission fluid I've known of loads of people having auto trans probs that have been solved by a simple fluid change. You've got nothing to loose.

as far as i can tell. if your is juddering on take off and juddering as you come to a halt, and also juddering during gear change, then get the clutch packs replaced. Inde Tech in milton keynes seem to be the de facto standard in doing this job. price cira 1K.
If however, as you seem to be saying, that the car will play up once the oil is warmed up, and will only judder on gear change, then most likely, an ATF change 'may' fix your problem. I know this because i too had similar symptoms to you i.e jerky gearchange once warm, and it was diagnosed as clutch pack. Since it had only been 30,000 miles since last oil change, i got the oil changed and driving now over 2000 miles with no problems.
