    What a day!

    Hi all,

Who knew servicing a car could be so much "fun"! Lol.. Bought all the service parts about 2 weeks ago, thought I'll do it all as the weather is nice.

First issue, seem to have a leak on one of the seals around the EGR area..

Have disconnected the cable going to the EGR and stuck a screw in the end. Then went on to the oil filter - just couldn't budge it! Even with a oil filter removal tool! While trying to remove this, the dipstick holder snapped off - great! Ordered a new one from eBay for a whole £2.90 but just blocked it off for now so the oil doesn't go everywhere!
Left the oil filter in, need to get a proper tool for it :P

Moved on to the rear brake pads, would the brakes budge.. nope. Also when removing the wheel found a big screw in the tyre lol.

Then when I wanted to go out this afternoon the battery had completely died.. I knew it was on the way out but think it just needed to round the day off haha!

Charged the battery so I could get the car where it needed to be and now I have the fuel warning light come on, the screen says 0 miles and the gauge shows as empty.. There is 3/4's of fuel in there :S Is this just a case of removing the fuse and putting it back in? If so which one is it please?

Anyhow, that was an interesting day.. think I deserved those beers this evening :P

Glad you can laugh about it, I would have torched the car if that had happened to me, lol.

Oh have a look at the Allard EGR delete kits, I have one on mine. Had a small oil leak on mine but the EGR delete kit fixed it.

What does the delete kit do? For now I have taken off the cable going to the EGR and put a screw in the end - same kind of thing?

By the way - if anyone ever has the issue where it shows fuel as being empty even though it's not, pull fuse 15 (instrument cluster) and 28 (fuel pump) turn the key so the ignition comes on - then turn it off, put the fuses back and start the car.. all working!

    Welcome to the forum.
Plugging the EGR pipe/hose (it's not a cable)can often cause the engine management light to come on after a few driving cycles but it's usually post 2003 cars that don't like it.
Judging by the mess your EGR is in on the outside I would guess that the inside is going to be really bad. I would advise that you remove & clean the EGR asap. Probably worth doing the inlet manifold too.
A word of advice is to always use genuine VAG parts for all servicing & repairs. Aftermarket parts usually work out to be a false economy. Often the main dealer or TPS are cheaper for parts than eBay so always check first.

Of course it's not a cable lol.. no idea why I said that :P
I was going to clean the EGR and the inlet manifold yesterday, but I couldn't get new seals in time. Will get these (btw, best place to get these would that be TPS as well?).

    Thanks for advice appreciate it!

I always use TPS. It's supposed to be for the trade, but tell them you're an independent sole trader & they're usually happy to serve you.

Not a problem, I got my oil through them so I've got a way I can order the parts

Thanks for the help guys! How many gaskets/seals are there in the EGR and inlet manifold?

I haven't removed it yet, just plugged it so the oil don't go everywhere.

    Re: What a day!

I snapped my dipstick funnel a few weeks back when I was servicing mine too. Sounds very similar, although I'd already drained the oil out ha. Meant the car was parked up for the day until a mate could take me to gsf. Mine was really brittle and I had to use some long nose pliers to carefully break it all off. New one just pushes on.

I'll be buying a spare next time I service just in case. For 3quid its not worth not having a spare.

Hope you manage to sort the egr leak. I need to look at mine, I suspect it's not been cleaned before also.

And as was said, I'm impressed you're still smiling about it

Haha, after what I've been through with my old car (Ford Fiesta TDCi) this is nothing. It happens, hopefully I treat her right, she treats me right

New battery has just been fitted, as well as oil filter - couldn't get the cap off because it was tightened to over 40nm! EGR leak seems common, and even with it blocked off it will still leak - options are get a new one which will just go wrong at some point again, or get the delete kit and remove it. Think that's the next job.
Now just the brake pads and the screw in the tyre that needs sorting. Oh and I have the issue where the temp sits between 50 and 90, but not at 90 - ordered some new bits (temp gauge and sensor), hopefully that will sort that.

That could be the stat not the gauge

What did you clean all the gunk off with? It looks much better!
Mine seems to be leaking from the pipes too (wet half way down a pipe) so may need to replace those too

Have you blanked off the EGR?
I did mine and it makes a difference for such a simple job, although i too didnt have the time to clean inside or out of the EGR and inlet manifold

    Hello mate,
Not sure what it was - a friend who came round to help with a few bits had a magic potion of brake cleaner and some other bits mixed in - just pray it on and away goes all the oil and carbon lol.

Have unplugged the EGR and put a screw in the cable so it completed the vacuum. I was looking at these EGR delete kits EGR Delete Kit VW, Seat, Skoda & Audi Tdi 130 pd engines but have read mixed reports on whether the EML will come on or not? Anyone know for definite what the rule is on this?

    Well it seems the leak is coming out of the EGR breather holes either side as well the seal for the inlet manifold;

It's oil mist through the air in take which comes from the rocker cover breather and it mixes with soot too from the egr and comes out as a black sticky oily mess

    Saves you looking lol

Yes some of it can come from the turbo seals too as I found out before I replaced my turbo

Clutch went yesterday as well lol. Got a new DMF and clutch kit from TPS today so will be fitting it this weekend. Knew it needed to be replaced at some point, but was hoping not yet.. lol. Maybe the new DMF will solve the vibration I have as well, if not at least I know it's the timing that's out.

Haha! I remember when I broke my dipstick. The part where it attaches was black and oily and it wasn't obvious how the thing attached. I was scared id ruined the engine I then found it was a £3 part and took 5 mins to fit. Yay.

Glad the car is getting sorted now!
