    Rough idle after cambelt change

    1997 Audi A4 2.8 Quattro, tip.

Just gt my car back after a cam belt change and at idle it feels as though one cylinder is missing. Also under 2000 revs while driving there is a vibration, again as if it is missing.

Once above 2000 revs the car behaves as before, being smooth and responsive.

Does anybody have an idea what could be wrong? Is it a case of having the garage replace the belt or is it somthing simpler?

Sounds like they have missed a tooth on replacement, however this should not happen and it would be a real sloppy job if this is the case, take it straight back to the stealers to sort out, assuming you got it done there!

The car is going back on Friday, it was running fine when it left us was their response.

If they had missed a tooth, would it still run?

yes it will still run but not very well
did they service the car aswell or just a new cambelt?

They serviced the car a week before the cambelt change.

Could it be as simple as a loose HT lead? Could they have moved one while changing the belt?

Seems strange that the car runs great above 2000 revs but is rough below that.

they may have removed plugs to make turning the engine over easy to recheck the marks still line up and not refitted one lead fully, or a plug or lead/coilpack may have gone faulty
if the timing belt was out the MIL lamp should come on
