    Avant tdi Quattro Sport

I'm in the market for an Avant tdi Quattro sport (2004 ish) but can not decide between 1.9 or 2.5. I know 1.9's are a bit rarer in Quattro form but i know they are sound engines. Would like full leather and will wait till the righht car comes along. What sort of mpg'sare you people getting from both models? I'm thinking 1.9 for economy but 2.5 for the extra hp but then again 2.5 going to be a lot more thirsty???

    Thanks in advance.

You may as well get a 1.8t than the v6 diesel.

A sweeping statement with no explanation to back it up?!

I have a 1.8t in an A3 Quattro and thats thrirsty as hell....goes like a train though also have a a 1.9 TDi A4 Avant Quattro and as Munchkin quoted i get around the same 45 mpg ... it's a totally different car to drive .... much more of a motorway cruiser compared to the A3 and i have to say it's really grown on me... good luck in your search

It all depends what your requirements are. There's some threads below with people's experiences. I'd suggest that on average a 1.9q will do 40-50mpg, whereas the 2.5q driven in a corresponding way would achieve 32-42mpg - obviously some will get more/less than these figures. I won't repeat all the pros & cons of both models here as they're in the other threads, but off the top of my head:
    • 1.9q is harder to find,
    • 1.9q does more mpg,
    • 1.9q is (potentially) more reliable - 2.5's are fine but if you buy a bad one you'll know it!
    • 2.5q is more powerful,
    • 2.5q has a great V6 growl not a four cylinder rattle,
    • 2.5q's tend to be better spec on average,
    • Both can be remapped; 1.9 to 170bhp ish and 2.5 to 210bhp ish
You need to drive both to see what works for you, personally the V6 growl of the 2.5 more than offsets the diesel rattle, and the fantastic everyday performance while still offering mid 30's mpg works for me.

Here's a few links you might find of interest.

I got a remap on my A3 from Awesome GTI and that gave me a rise of 2.2 on my average mpg as well as 30bhp increase

And why would you say that ? Ever driven one ? I have driven all sorts of cars and none of the STANDARD 1.8T gave me the shove in the back the 180 Bhp v6 tdi does ! If you remap the v6 lump it goes even better ! The 04 plate cars have all bugs ironed out and the later type cam roller heads. They have no sludge issues and much better economy than the 1.8T quattro. What folk don't understand is the fuel economy is very good for a v6 lump that does 150 Mph and can seat 5 in comfort + it comes quattro as standard...

I bought my 1.9tdi Avant on the basis of economy. But I was thinking recently that diesels (as well as avants) come with quite a price premium over petrols, so for a saving to be made, which is at least a grand difference, so you have to do your sums to see if you would really be making a saving overall.

This is what I was getting at with my "might as well get a 1.8t" comment.

Cheaper fuel I'll give you, is it 7p a litre? The economies of scale depend purely on personal experiences of mpg, mileage driven and purchase price. A similarily driven 2.5 would give you an extra 8-10 mpg over the 1.8T.

More powerful? The majority of 1.8's are 150 or 163bhp, the 190's are relatively scarce. I don't have torque figures to hand, but I know where my money lies

There's a world of differences between the two engines, they're not really comparable. My point was that your comment came with no justification so not very helpful to the original poster.

I have a 1.9TDi quattro avant and average 41mpg around town, 45-48 on motorway with cruise....

However just had the car chipped at the weekend so expect these to improve by about 5mpg, the car also drives like a petrol now, very smooth, power right up to 4000 rpm, best £175 I ever spent, would highly recommend once you get your diesel......

FWIW over 2,400 miles i've averaged a little over 42mpg.

driven like a mouse I got 49.7 on tankfull (but reckon the speedo was out with the orig wheels c.5%)

Ireckon the 2.5 is the best diesel engine i've ever known. The d5 volvo runs it close - that is a vastly underrated motor.

my busness partner has a b7 2.0 fwd and that's a cracker too, 50 to the gallon but is a typical in "one shove" peaky tdi.

I'd have either but the 2.5 tdi quattro is the perfect all round motor for me. It cruises all day and runs with the hounds when called on.

if you cant afford a 2.5 then a 1.9 will be fine, the quatrro system is heavy so a 1.9 will have to do more work to make it shift, the 2.5 makes its real easy to pull,

Thankyou for all your replies people. Interesting the volvo d5 was mentioned they are a cracking engine but bit of an old mans car for me. Guess i wii have to see what comes up in the a4 line then, i'm swaying towards a remapped 1.9 i think.
