does the front sub frame hold the engine in place? just im not 100% sure that it does, or is it there for front frame stability and hold the lower wishbones in place giving stability ?

no not really, theres 2 ally bits on the n/s and o/s that bolt to the chassis legs that the engine mountings are on. but thru the ally bits is also another longer bolt that also goes thru the subframe mount too. the subframe mounting/bush is sandwiched between the ally bit and the chassis leg by this longer bolt.
