My dads A4 2.5tdi did this for ages turned out the people who did the cambelt before he bought the car didnt time it properly and it was almost 2 teeth out of time. So when he got a new cambelt fitted and the car was timed correctly it now start on the button everytime.

Highly unlikely glowplugs in this weather, Coolant Temp Sensor, crank sensor, MAF sensor or dying battery.

I'll move this to the B6 section.

I'd get the fuel pump timing checked with VCDS too.

Not sure if this affects the 2.5 engine but a dodgy light switch can cause starting problems I've only seen it on the 1.9 up to now

The switch causes a fault in the off position and the car will take a few turns before it fires but if you put the side lights on it will fire first time

Worth a check seen as though its easy to check and free

The bloke who owned my 2.5 before me stated that he had fitted a new battery due to starting issues.

He said the thing would crank (not really any slower than usual) but wouldn't fire - a new battery sorted it out....

really? its a pretty common problem there was even a thread not so long back for a replacement headlight switch on ebay for £20 and a few people mentioned it on there

I have a similar problem on my 2.5TDI. Sometimes, when motor is warm, it needs some time to start. When cold, never had a similar problem. And when warm, not always, just some time.

Battery fitted new last summer, no faults on VAG-COM. No idea what to else look for
