Hi

I have a 2001 A4 1.8T in metallic grey (AVJ engine code / B6 model) with 137k. Couple of little dings and suchlike and needs a decent valet but otherwise OK condition apart from the engine. Coolant light keeps flashing and car wont start. Any idea what the issues could be? I have another car so Im really not sure whether to fix it, break it for parts or sell as a project.

Whats the likely going rate for the car fully fixed and whats it likely to make as a spares/repairs project? Anyone fancy it?

Thanks for the advice

Paul..

Hi Paul, welcome to ASN. Im sure one of the guys will be along shortly to help you out. Enjoy the forum. :)

All depends on whats wrong and what history.how and when things went wrong

Abit more detail will help... even a couple pictures to show bodywork condition

Selling it in parts - you will always make youre money - over selling it faulty as a whole... but depends on problem. If it can be repaired - then you will get decent money even at 137K - depending on service history/receipts etc...

The coolant light flashes when the tank is low or the car is overheating. The floats in the coolant tank reservoir tend to stick after a while. You need to ideally check it for faults on the computer, this should throw a code directing you to fault..

im no expert - but thats my take on it...

check out others guys responses...

best of luck

is the coolant topped up?
wont start? jesus..... does it crank over? is the timing correct? have you got fuel pressure? have you had it fault code read?

Hi all,

Thanks for the advise so far. Coolant is topped up, its cranking but doesnt seem to fire at all, havent checked the fault codes as dont have a reader - will try to source one and try that next.

Paul..

the AVJ engine is hard to get
you could make your money on that alone depending on the fault
when if stopped working what happend ? did it just not start one day or did it go when you was driveing ?

could be fuel pump, crank sensor?
without a code read you could be wasting your time checking stuff thats not faulty.

your could start by pulling a coil out, stick a spark plug in the end and lay it on the rocker cover to earth it. see if you have a spark.

fuel wise, look under the engine cover and find the fuel rail. somewhere on it there should be a take off with like a valve cap on it. remove the cap and theres a schrader valve (like a tyre valve) in it. push the middle bit in. if fuel squirts out then you can assume your pumps got power and is working!
if you cant find the valve, you could get a couple of spanners and slightly undo the feed pipe to the rail to find out. mind you dont get fuel squirted everywhere tho.
