Hi all,

Well I've come to the conclusion that I need a new clutch.

The bite is right at the top of the pedal and it sometimes judders when pulling away.

I've spoken to 2 local independents. Midland VW over Cannock and VW Rescue at Wombourne near Wolverhampton.

One has quoted £740 all in and the other has quoted £835 all in (both worst case scenario needing a DMF and clutch kit)

I know I'm not going to get it done for 50 pence and a packet of Monster Munch, but does anyone know of a good reliable garage that'll use good quality parts that can do the job cheaper?

TIA,

Alan

dont go with cheap parts m8 it might bite ya *** back costing twice as much... i put a link up few weeks ago from ebay with dmf and clutch kit on fleabay for very good price gen luk kit try doing a search m8.... and i know jody @ midland vw very well.... search for the parts and get jody to fit them you may knock £100 off

Between the 2 of them, Midland VW seemed more "knowledgeable"

I mentioned that it was recommended that the DMF be changed when changing a clutch. His reply quite surprised me when he said "not necessarily" It may only need a clutch kit. It'd save me a packet.

Does anyone know how long they would need the car for? 1 day or 2 days?

£750 is a decent price if using oem parts!
i paid £740 for mine recently using LUK dmf and clutch kit with release bearing and slave cylinder! at a local vw specialist!
my clutch is super soft now, does not judder and bites really low down, compared to before!
its the labour that costs a bit as it is a 6 hour job!
just make sure they replace the release bearing while at it, as these are sometimes not included in the clutch kit unless asked for!

ive sorced my own parts from a m8 and jody done the labour took around 4hrs cost around £500 with rear mains and a gearbox mounting aswell

Both of these quoted £200 fixed for labour. so the other £540 is for the parts....

I'm checking on here to make sure that the quotes seem about right. I would assume that the 2 independents (they are both reputable as far as I know) would only use OEM equivalent parts anyway.

I could source the parts myself, but then Midland VW / VW rescue wouldn't give me the 12 month warranty... Catch 22

got mine done about 2 weeks ago,, £600 inc dmf, luk parts used !!
was told this was a good price !
he is a mate though, so dunno if he did it at mates rates, he is running a business after all !

true but your car is mapped anyhows so no come back eitherv way ???

That is a good price by the sounds of it. Whereabouts are you?

i was qouted that 700 odd off jody with drive in and out but sorced luk parts myself to save the extra 100-150

alan also try audi they may do a price match.......lol

Mine judders when setting off in 1st but the bite point seems normal.

I was thinking it may be the clutch on mine aswell - may put off getting a remap now until I have saved enough to do both... always the way!

Ideally I would like to find a solid-flywheel conversion, but doesnt look like anyone does them.

LUK Clutch and Dual mass from Europarts are very cheap with the 15% discount they currently have
Im told this is OEM equivelent

I'm tempted by unipart. I get discount, full price it'll be about £500, with a 15% discount (I may get a bit more) it'll be about £425...

I paid £966 for a clutch & DMF at MVW - although mine is the 2.5 V6 TDI. All fitted the same day, totally transformed the car. I use MVW for all my work & servicing, they know their stuff so would recommend :icon_thumright:
Audi quoted @ £1550 :undwech:

I'm still really undecided what to do. I'm trying to justify the cost of the clutch being nearly one third what the car is worth........:sadlike:

But, once it's done, in theory it should last another 10 years......

just custom map it and keep the torque sensible until the revs get a bit higher just had mine custom mapped from a generic at awesome because it was pretty fierce from low down and about a month back realised how the mrs drives low rpm gearchanges makes the car very jumpy and it went through my head of the pressure on my clutch and dmf so decided to bite the bullit but done a deal with awesome to have the custom upgrade without the custom cost it now handles the power so much better it's now mint..... even goes well of the lights as before just wheelspin city....

Clutch is going to be done in 2 weeks time. I can get the clutch kit (including the bearing) and a DMF for just under £440 from Unipart. I've spoken to one or two people and have been told that their parts are on a par with ECP and GSF.

My uncle, a mechanic by trade (but retired from doing foreigners) has offered to do it for me. so total cost will be £600 plus some bacon butties.....

Quick news flash. Euro car parts have beat Uniparts quote by £30. So now I can get LUK parts for £410.
My uncle has now told me he's reluctant to do it because of the work involved. VW Rescue wil do it for £240 all in. So a total of £650. Now this is more like it I think.
