    Question EGR - remove&blank, or clean&keep?

As title, just interested in the general numbers of forum members that have removed their EGR valve, when compared to those that have actively decided not to remove it.

Any B6 1.9 TDI 130 reasons/experiences would be personally welcome, but all feedback in relation to the poll and EGR welcome.

Hi, recently I have took my egr valve off and cleaned it. I strugled a bit with the bolts which were a bit rounded off however I managed to get them off with the alen key. I went to the steelers and bought the egr valve gasket and new bolts which in my case were necesary. I have cleaned it with petrol, put the whole unit in petrol for about an hour or so and used a metal brush to clean all of the carbs off. I have blanked the egr with proper metal plate. I've heard of people using tin cans cut to shape to block it off however apparently after few months it blows it's way through.

Easy job and made a big difference in my car's response to the accelerator pedal, definately worth it.

i took mine off to clean but was surprised it did not need cleaning it did look a bit black and sutty but there was zero carbon build up . i can only put this down to the regular use of forte diesel treatment . unfortunately i ended up replacing the egr valve due to a split rubber diaphram in the anti shudder valve

Just fitted the Allard delete kit to mine, all seems fine but a bit early to compare fuel figures, but the flat spot I had seems to have gone and the back of the car sure is a lot cleaner!

What's the main difference between the Allard kit and a DIY delete? Do they both cause the engine management light problem?

Couldnt you have just blanked off the EGR rather than replace it ?

    anti shudder valve[/QUOTE]

I'm guessing this could create shuddering at idle? Just minor? As mine is doing this, and my EGR was quite oily, had it cleaned the other day as it's a bit leaky. ( outside only )

I do keep wondering about this, if you go down the Allard route its like £56 for the kit!!! or as above you can buy blanking plates and just get rid of the standard EGR...decisions decisions..........

all i did was put a blanking plate on

you will be paying out more money for the allard kit and it does near enough the same thing it just stops the exhaust gasses circulating yes the allard might be more pleasing to the eye but at that price no thanks

i made the blanking plates so cost me nothing and your not going to gain with the allard you will just loose £56!

does it sound like you got a dyson under the bonnet m8..... your secondary air unit is rivited together and eventually the rivits come loose causing it to loose air and cause a fault doubt the egr is your issue...... they can be drilled out and 5mm bolts fitted

That Ebay plate, wouldn't it need a gasket to stop it leaking?

I'm wondering that too. Could do with some pics, instructions and conclusions. Like the idea of more power economy and running smoother could just do with knowing at what cost and cane someone of my fairly novice skill do it myself...

im confuese here, if you dont want an EGR valve, why not just unplug the sucker pipe that goes to it so its alwys closed? and also what beniffits do you get from stopping a EGR valve from working ?

You get slightly better mpg due to the car burning cleaner but your talking 1 to 2 mpg max

The main advantages would be the egr won't soot up and stick the inlet manifold would not soot up and you won't get leaking gunk from the egr

so why all the blanking off? just un-plug the sucker pipe at the EGR valve and stick a screw bolt up the pipe to seal the vac system. job done.

Any thoughts on blanking plates vs Allard pipe?

As I understand it the Allard pipe would affect the anti-shudder valve?

with the allard pipe it's a nice clean pipe, unlike the egr pipe with bits in the middle,so I'd say its easier to pass through so more beneficial to the car. It does affect the shudder,a little wobble at turn off!
also it has an outlet on the pipe,in case you want to run boost controller, monitor.

it comes with a blanking plate too. Bit pricey yes the kit,but I got lucky on eBay at £40.

I thought after a certain year the ecu monitors the egr?

i know our 2000 Golf doesn't as I've pulled the vac pipe on it before but our 2004 plate Golf puts the EM light up but doesn't effect the actual running of the engine.

i keep meaning to try cleaning our Golf's egr out and blanking the vac pipe and see how it does. The car suffers from random boost deviance so I'm tempted to loose the vac pipes that I don't need anyway to try and find the problem for that aswell

How much of a wobble is there, and is this detrimental in any way to the car?

You could just take the vac pipe off the feed to the shudder valve to see how that feels.

dont forget that the anti shudder valve also could stop your engine running on if it suffered from diesel runaway. But on a well maintained at that is a very small risk

Do you get any shudder at all?

You do notice judder.some worse times than others.
Newer models think from 02 not sure, bring on the eml with egr delete.
A good mapper will be able to delete it.

Deano1978 Yes the light illuminates and extinguishes as should do. AVF engine. When I first got the car I disconnected the vac line to the EGR and left it like that for over 2 years, my manifold was fairly clean when removed to clean inside it, delete EGR also mr muscle the turbo but its still only at 88k miles. I always use miller sport 4 fuel additive, I don't know if this helps to keep things clean outwith the fuel system or is there any trace after combustion but for all the cost why not, It says it improves power Car goes very well

I want a decat like yourself Deano1978 but am scared of breaking my turbo shaft, I do drive quite hard, is it worth doing ?

Crazey? Soon as i put a plate on mil came on and tried with it just unplugged, still came on!
I use the eco stuff from halfords. mr muscle has been down there too.
I'd say i have a strong remap as i can wheel spin in 3rd (in the dry) but dont if ever do it, im very wise with my torque, pulls in 6th very well too.
I put it down to the mapper.
Told him ive the direct cold air intake, free flow exhaust and wanted the egr delete, boy did i notice a difference.
Im still catted from the turbo, just middle and end cats removed. Not sur about full decat as sone stories say the turbo can over spool, but also say spool up time is quicker again,Hmmmmm

i reccommend the cats removed center and back and ur notice an improvment

Yeah, strange one that about MIL.
I have a strong remap too, it even sounds aggressive compared to standard ! I have a cold feed induction kit also and instead of spinning the wheels, I could if I tried spin up the clutch in first to third (quattro), you need to be gentle with the torque. I know there are guys on here with a lot more power than me, but my clutch etc are all standard for now, the tyres don't like it at all !
So you still have your catalytic convertor and you have removed the silencer boxes/baffles ?
I would remove my cat if I thought it wasn't going to break the turbo. I aim for healthy useable power, with improved economy or else I would have bought a S4
Sorry for deviating from the thread topic.

Clean it out and had to to keep on mine due to the light popping up being a 2004.

I did fit a smaller holed egr gasket from the mk3 Ibiza that vastly reduces the gas flow but allows enough not to trigger the EML light.

Works a treat and feels really punchy in most gears for a none mapped car
