    Question 1.8t 190 Bex question

    Hi all,

Jst joined tonight and thought i'd jump straight into the deep end, i had my 1.8t BEX eng code remapped recently absolutely delighted with the performace now, have asked this question on another forum with no joy, so here goes, at around 5000 rpm the car slightly fluctuates in power almost like a pulsing, only when pushing hard, i am not certain if this happens all the time but have noticed it on more than 1 occasion, the remap brought the power with standard coolers, exhaust etc to 235bhp, now i no other cars dont make this without the mentioned mods but i am delighted with the gains, my question regarding the power fluctuating is has anyone experienced this, and how did they sort it,

is my standard DV leaking boost?
are my standard injectors maxing out?

the cars pull is immense, jst this niggle i have, find it hard to beleive my injectors although in standard form are maxing out, although the turbo is glowing alot more than usual on a hard run, would this suggest leaning out too much? or part and parcel with higher boost i do let it run to cool down obviously. the remap was done by Jim at Star, and he was impressed with the gain and happy with the car, so i am wondering if i have developed a problem recently, i have full VCDS there is only the occasional EVAP incorrect flow intermittant code throwing up, from time to time, any input or advice would be appreciated, cheers. Hi, welcome to the site! I have the same engine, and had similar symptoms when I had a boost leak, even a tiny pin hole will show up with the power you are running!

jst a map, will prob best phone jim and see what he suggests, been reading about n75 valves giving up and also spiking boost levels, but you could prob diagnose the car with every problem going, guessing is an expensive business, but appreciate there has to be a bit of trial and error.

it only does it at around 5000rpm, looking at the graph possibly around maximum power, its like i am backing of the throttle then on again, you can feel the car pulsing when this happens.

Intercoolers can't cope. I had the same problem at a ASN RR day down at Badger5 , on my 3rd run Bill (badger5) shut the run down and explained that even with the mods and remap the side mounted intercoolers are no longer up to the job. I have yet to bring the car back down to Bills for a custom front mount..

There are upgraded side mounted intercoolers on ebay, they £100ish each the 190T requires two.. I will have Bill build me a custom stealth front mount, I'm not into the exposed looking intercoolers

Could it be air intake hose collapse? It sounds like an adventurous map to say the least and I personally wouldn't want to be at those figures without thinking about possibly having to dip further into the wallet. I guess it's all about tollerances and I've not really wanted to get into the ball park where things get at all hazy with regard to what else might need to be changed. I had thought about getting a different air intake hose on mine but I've had no evidence of this problem with the map I've got and that also goes for the smic's and injectors.

GrayT Thankyou for you input, have been looking into TIP already, think it would be a must, to be fair rollers normally give a lower reading normally due to the heat soak but on the day the temp outside was sub zero and in front of the fans wasn't any greater, I was planning on spending more cash on the car anyway, inter coolers wasn't an area I was planning to head towards, I was aware I have 2, which goes to show if you have a 163 or indeed 150 being mapped up, a bigger cooler would be a must, when Audi are fitting 2 on a 190, the car in standard form was missing low down torque and needed mid overtake gear changes, talking country roads here!!!! I went from a remapped 225 megane, to the Audi, thinking there shouldn't be a massive difference, I was wrong but now the Audi feels similar to the megane before its map, albeit a much heavier car. I was planning upgrading TIP and DV anyway, but would rather get this pulsing sorted first, but If I found it was a combination of the two failing then that's grand I know my enemy!!! Jst looking for any advice from people who have have experienced my prob and gone, try this it's your........... And its appreciated I'll get the spanners out and skin a few nuckles, might need to take the car back to star and put her on the rollers if I can't trace the prob, cheers for the suggestions, it's good ask and learn a bit more.

When remapping our cars the DV should be replaced with either a TT unit or a good aftermarket unit. Also the TIP is well known to collapse under boost and this will effect the car and from what your saying it more prominent when pushing hard it could well be the tip.

Yes, I agree. Changing the DV was recommended prior to my remap and I had it fitted at the same time (so I can't really comment on how it would have performed without). It is relatively inexpensive to change to a good aftermarket one so I would say do so as soon as you can. I am leaving the TIP for now because I have had no signs that my stock one has been collapsing, but if I was in your situation that's probably what I would be looking into. Again, if my map was achieving any greater figures than I have logged I would change as soon as I could. I'll continue to monitor the situation and there's no question that the inherent flexibility in the stock one is a weak point. I hadn't thought that it was too easy to find off the counter versions (at reasonable cost) for 190's without some modification, but it would appear that docurley has done OK with the Autobahn 88 one.

I totally understand your reasons for the remap. I had a remapped SEAT Toledo V5 before and whilst in standard shape the A4 was a touch faster I was sorely missing the torque and the ability to use the performance lower down the rev range. That was the sole reason for me going for a remap and I have to say it totally transformed the car. The niggles I had about it before have totally vanished. Post remap it feels like the car it should have been in the first place. Best of luck getting your issue sorted.

My tip required me to by some additional pipes to get it to work but you can get some off the shelves from the US that will do the job I think.

Lads thanks again for the help, much appreciated, bet the v5 would of had a fair bit of grunt after the map, so a TT DV I presume the one found on the 225, or a forge 007p, was looking at the TIP from the states any1 have any recommendations?

    Hi,

I've had an AVJ remapped, and I was unaware that the the 190's had 2 SMIC's. Also, the TIP "collapse" Do people by stainless tubing or silicon?

Does the other SMIC fit on the opposite side of the car?

    Does it plumb straight in?

    Thanks,

    Alan
