Offset can range from et43 -et35. The lower the number the closer the wheel will sit to the arch

ET 43 is what came from the factory on A4 wheels (not sure about S4/RS4), for 18's I run 235/40/18.......

    S4's run ET45.

    "Factory" B6's with 18" wheels were 8J running ET43 on 235/40 rubber.

As mentioned, ET35 is pretty good unless you're into "poke" and "stance"

    Cheers for the replies guys.

So ET35 would fill the arch a little better (i.e. make the stance wider)?

So I'm on the lookout for 18's with 235/40/18 tyres............does anyone happen to know how much more these would weigh over 225/40/18 (approx obv.), and how much more full my arches will look on 235's?

Getting the ET as close to the manufacturer's spec as possible is best for steering feedback, going with lower ET's changes the scrub radius and the steering feedback lightens and is more prone to kickbacks (although minor in scale). But it does fill the arch more, so it's all about priorities: look over feel.

Although, I'm saying this coming from a previous car where the standard ET was +45 and was common to fit +0 or minus offset wheels! So it was a bit more of an issue there!

If you plan on lowering the car substantially then you might want to stick with the slightly higher offset. You can always space it out afterwards if you are wanting that look. The last thing you want to do it get a low offset, lower it loads and find that you have a bit of scrubbage.
