Can anyone help with the location of a good Audi 2.5 Tdi AKE engine.. i've spoken to Sanburn and theyre fully out of stock and reckon that this is not an easy piece of kit to locate..

Any suggestions would be most welcome...

The reasons for my need is as follows from a separate thread:

The cam under cylinder 4 is well worn and as such the valve is not opening properly (Pressure blowing the wrong way).
The cam under cylinder 2 is also very well worn and has caused the rockers to jump out of position and snap two followers. (like you diagonosed Adam)
There's also a hairline crack around one of the injectors..

All in all the prices i';m getting for Cams / followers and hydrolic's is around the £1,200 mark without labour ...

The car's going in for a 2nd opinion tomorrow but, I've got tears in my ears..

I struggled to find one for mine, and it cost me £1500 plus vat.

If I had my time again I'd rather spend the money on my existing engine as it's a known quantity.

Cheers James, was that price including fitting.. ?
When you say, if you did it again you'd spend the money on your existing one, why is that..?? is this one lacking in some way ?

Long story VERY short .....

Timing belt skipped 4 teeth and garage advised probably cheaper to source a replacement engine as followers were broken and gone down oilways etc, so I found one for £1.5k plus vat, which was sold to me as a replacement rather than a recon, but that had been fully checked over and any worn bits replaced. Then £1k to fit at my local garage. Six days after I get the car back and BANG, no. 2 engine self destructs. So it goes back to engine supplier who have the car 6 weeks and 'replace' the engine (a bolt on the tensioner pulley had broken). So the car now stands me at just under £3k.

I get the car back and it's running like a bag of bolts. In addition 3 or my 4 new wheels are damaged, oil on the seats etc etc so I refuse to use the original supplier (not my local garage who were brilliant) so it goes off to a local VAG specialist. They diagnose the need for a couple of new injectors and the needle valve and say that in their opinion the timing gear on the engine is not new ....... so I bite the bullet and commission the work which hits me for a further £1.5k - so the total nightmare cost me £4.5k to resolve.

In hindsight ..... my local garage could have totally rebuilt my existing engine for a LOT less than that and I would have an engine I knew the history of, whereas now I have no idea about my engine. That said, this was 3 years ago and the car has been ok since (touch wood).

Moral of the story is don't buy an engine from an unknown supplier at the other side of the country.

I agree...it might be better, in the long term, and looking at the bigger (financial) picture, to spend £3000 on a full engine rebuild of your existing engine than go the replacement route at maybe £1500 plus £1000 fitted, but not your engine!!
Better the devil you know!

****** Hell mate, that story was worthy of a hammer house of horror full feature..

The things that you went through are the things that I'm most worried about happening if I had to go out and buy an unknown second hand engine.

I think i agree with you completely that the best way sensibly to attack this will be be to have my engine repaired / rebuilt and bite the bullet with the labour costs etc ..

Thanks for the insight mate. i really appreciate it ..

Sorry to here your story Quattro James -Luckily i have owned 2 x 2.5TDI Q Sports and both of them seemed great got the last one up to 137k miles and seemed strong..but you never know hey. Was going to get another but not sure now. Seanr Good luck mate. Hopefully Steve can sort it.

They're good engines. Prior to my ownership at the 80k timing belt change they "checked" the pulleys but didn't replace them .....

I have a 2 good running enginse 1 is in my allroad, the other in my a4 quattro. Both can be driven prior removal. They are both AKE code, with all belts replaced last summer and allways fed synthetic oil at 6k miles. I am swapping a souped-up 1.9 Tdi engine wich should be ok with the weight of the car (I hope !)... I can even fit it for you if you give me a few days, i am based in N. london. regards, Chris- 077 899 12128.

Here's a few pictures of the car mate, just to let you know that i don't neglect my car in any way, shape or form ! Had the motor for a few good years and it's been a slow moddifying process...
