I remember reading some months ago on here that there was someone who can fit the dual stage airbag MFSW's into a single stage standard steering wheel B6, can anyone point me in the direction of who that may be please?

I would like to get a FBMF steering wheel for my A4 but I'd rather pay someone who knows what they are doing to do the work for me, but I'm not interested in paying that company that specialises in doing the conversions cos their prices are a tad extreme in my opinion!

Also, what parts would I need to do the swap? I know I'd need a different slip ring, but which one?

Any help appreciated,

Arron :)

you'll need steering wheel, air bag, steering wheel loom, slip ring, air bag loom plug and a steering wheel control modual depending on which one you have fitted, i could be wrong but you may need a new one if you plan on putting roller button type steering wheel in.

i still have all the dealer invoices with the p/n from when i did mine too if you need them

where abouts are you?

Wow, so all of those parts you list there I would need to get? Are all FBMF wheels a compatible fit across all audi's no matter what age of car? (i mean the steering wheel onto the steering column, not the wiring)

Eg- if I was to get an RS6 or S3 FBMF wheel, would that fit onto my B6? Then just a case of sorting wiring and airbag....

I'm based in Hertfordshire mate, miles and miles and miles away from you! Lol

thats all you'll need to fit it and get the buttons working. if your not to bothered about the buttons working, you only need the first 3.

can't say about the rs6 or the s3 wheel but most people go for a fbsw out of either a tt or a b7 sline 3 spoke or in my case an s4 one (got a brand new s4 one for half the pirce of a used sline wheel) some people have put a b7 rs4 fbsw in but i think its only the volume buttons that work.

as for the wiring it all depends on what parts you have, some people have used a b6 slip ring and rewired the steering wheel wiring loom, i done it the other way and got the right parts so mine was 99% plug and play.

like i said, it depends on what parts you've got, what you want to get working and how much money you've got to spend.

Nice one paul, cheers for that info!

So for instance if I was to get an rs6 MFSW would I need to get an rs6 slip ring? The steering wheel wiring loom I'm assuming is the wiring attached to the airbag itself? And the steering wheel loom is the wiring for the buttons on the wheel? And the control module is purely for the buttons to work in order to connect them to the appropriate devices?

I'm also looking at getting an RNS-E, I've already got an RNS-D, so I probably would want all the buttons working on the steering wheel.

behind your air bag there is the steering wheel wiring loom that plugs into the front of the slip ring, air bag and wheel. this dose the air bag, horn and the buttons.

the slip ring just plugs directly into the steering wheel control modual (SWCM) and transfers the signals from the steering wheel loom to the swcm. there is a small yellow plug at the back of the slip ring with 2 wires, that is the airbag plug thats attached to the car and if your putting in a new slip ring, this is the air bag loom plug that need changed.

the swcm controls everything attached to the steering wheel and there is lots of different versions depending on what options you have.

not sure about the rs6 wheel or the s3 wheel as most people tend to go for one out a b7 shape or the tt wheel so i can't say that it will work for sure and as for your last question, my car is a 2001 b6 a4 with b7 s4 mfsw with rns-e and all my buttons work even without proraming first.

some people have had problem when going from rns d to rns e because the e unit requires 4 plugs to work correctly, the d unit has only 3.
it will still navagate, play cds, mp3's and radio but you'll have to get a harness. if your lucky the 4th plug will be there but unused.

Your a star! Thanks Paul! Mine is also a 2001 model, so ideally I'd want to get a b7 S4 steering wheel or a b7 rs4 steering wheel and the part numbers that you used should work bang on just the same for me?

As with the RNS-D to RNS-E, I heard it's a pretty simple swap with just needing a harness and an adapter for the aerial as the aerials are different fitment between the two? So if it will still navigate, play cd's / mp3's, and play the radio with just 3 plugs, what does the 4th plug actually do then? Is that the plug for steering wheel controls?

Thanks again mate,

Arron

Oh, do you have any pics of your steering wheel fitted and dash at all? :)

the rs4 wheel has less funtions but yes. mk2 tt fbmfsw look the same but have more funtions.

got mine from here

i think it was can problems ie, no info on dis, no button illumination and it doesn't turn off with key removal but other than that they work fine. not sure if the mfsw control are throught the 4th plug or not, i'll remove mine tomorrow at work and unplug it and see what happens.

i added cruise control, full dis, rnse and b7 mfsw at the same time, the s4 doner car that i found had the black inlays so i had them too and heres mine now (added a video to show the buttons working)

its easy to swap from rns-d to E theres a guide on google iv dont it a few times just wire swapping etc
the rs6 s3 etc will fit your car with no probs

B6 has single stage & B7 has dual stage, you would need to convert to dual which may require a different airbag controller & additional wiring, plus coding, you need to compare airbag controllers with a B7 owner to be sure.

I am able to fit them, but nobody can guarantee the airbag will fire unless you have the dual stage setup, so you're aware of this before you jump in all feet..........................

Thanks to you all for the responses!

Paul - thanks for taking the trouble to help me along with this, I can't see the 'after' picture though, only the before. Video won't work on my phone either so will have to check that out when I get home.

Bez - I'll do a google search for the RNS swap, cheers for the heads up!

NHN - thanks for all the info as well. Could you pm me a price for fitting the steering wheel please? I take it I'd have to supply all the parts needed? Where abouts are you based? I did know about the dual stage, I guess that just adds to the cost of more parts that are required! This is one expensive mod!! But does make a massive difference I must admit and brings the interior bang up to date.

Those prices have got a bit extreme, it was nearly 3 years ago, but I paid about £850 for mine, brand new RS6 / R8 steering wheel..... which given the parts probably add up to more than that now: even from that eBay supplier it's £680 for the wheel + airbag alone! At the time, that steering wheel was marked as being over €800 on VagCat!

Mine still had the shrink-wrap plastic on it and I've got the full wiring loom with all the buttons working, even the "high" voice control features :)

Ah how weird! I came across a thread on here via google search about this and you was the person making posts on that thread Lostbok so I sent you a pm asking you some questions about it about 10 minutes ago before I realised you had replied to this thread!

So I read that you got hazzy dayz to fit the steering wheel for you, do you mind me asking what they charged you to fit it? I'm assuming you bought the wheel and airbag elsewhere and gave it hazzy dayz to fit rather than it cost you £850 for them to supply and fit it for you all in?

I don't quite understand hazzy dayz website, cos it lists a flat bottom MFSW for a B6 A4 at £930, plus vat it works out at £1116! So I'm guessing that's for them to supply the steering wheel, airbag, and all other parts to get it all singing and all dancing??

If i could find a step by step guide with s list of all parts required with the relevant part numbers I'd do the swap myself and save a small fortune.

i paid £500ish for a the steering wheel+airbag, control module, loom, slip ring, air bag plug and cruise control stalk. the only 2 things that where 2nd had was the air bag and the slip ring. i did all the work myself without any help except for the programing.

if you plan on doing it yourself and there no one on here near by, give me a pm and i'll help as much as i can.

Nice one cheers paul! Much appreciated.

So do I have to get the steering wheel specific (as in if I were to get an rs6 wheel) would I need to get the rs6 control module, loom, slip ring, and airbag plug which would normally be for an rs6 of which that steering wheel come out of? Or do I get the above parts for an A4? Say a B7 A4?

most of the stuff i looked at from other people use b7 parts for the internals, almost everone uses the exact same control module out a b7.

best place to start is the wheel, then get the other bits after you have actully have it.

Yeah I think I'll do exactly that paul.

Do you have a rough idea how much each of the internal parts that I'll need are? Just so I can work out a budget. ;)

Thanks for your help mate

control module: £150 from dealer, can get on ebay cheaper but i got board after 2 months waiting for 1
airbag loom: £17 from dealer if the wheel you buy doesn't have one(might come with air bag if you buy second hand)
airbag plug £3 from dealer
slip ring: can't remember dealer price £150ish i think???? they go on ebay for £50ish
air bag: got mine off ebay for £120, dealer price is around £400ish
steering wheel: depends on which one, mine was £170 from the site i mentioned.
