Hi there. I have a 2002 Audi A4 Cabriolet 2.4 sport manual. Today it has developed a fault selecting fifth gear. Basically every other gear is fine but when you go to engage fifth its stiff to go in. I noticed it was stiff once yesterday when driving the car but then it cleared. It doesn't crunch into the gear and it makes no difference if the engine is running or not, the cars in motion, or stationary. So far I've been to one Audi specialist in Burton On Trent. He informs me that fifth has a second clutch or something similar to select it and this fails internally in the box?? He's suggesting its a reconditioning of the gear box.

I'm not totally convinced partly for the reason that I don't want it to be that costly to put right. Also advised it may be a ceased selector shaft, I just can't understand or get consistent advice at present that I'm confident with. Any suggestions greatly welcomed....

Would I be right in thinking this may not be a common problem experienced by anyone else?
