4rse, low oil pressure light came on this evening.......

I know the horror stories - top end starved of oil, change the oil, filter and oil pickup etc - just don't have the time to do it myself, so got to try and get it into my independent garage - only problem, I started a new job a fortnight ago, after being out of work for 8 months and can't take any time off to take it in - not to mention actually needing the damn thing for a 75 mile daily round trip to work and back!

4rse!!!!!

Just sounding off really!!!

PITA for sure mate, don't be tempted to drive it though. Get it recovered and fixed properly, thats the cheapest way.

Low oild pressure light is mostly triggered by low oil. Checked your oil levels first?

As a quick one do an oil change with some oil additive to try and remove some possible build up.

More than likely the strainer on the pickup is blocked.

i take it that its not good to have the strainer blocked?

the low preasure light comes on with low preasure !
the low oil light comes on with low oil

Not always.

The pick up is in a different place to the level sensor so if the oil sloshes to one side on a bend braking and giving it beans, less oil can be picked up causing low oil pressure but might not trigger low oil.

Check your oil level as its easy to do.

The oil pressure on my old punto Gt turbo used to drop on when the oil needed to be changed. It used to break down and was unable to sustain pressure. I quick change of the oil was all it needed. May be similar

There is a known issue with Low Oil Pressure and the 1.8T lump - caused by the oil turning to sludge and blocking the oil pickup, starving the top end of oil, causing the engine to go pop.

I've run VCDS on it and the oil pressure sensor is doing it's job - it reckons it's "ok" but I don't believe that for a minute.

I haven't driven it since the warning displayed (used the Wife's A2 for work today - horrible thing, the car, not the Wife!). Popped into a main dealer near work and picked up a new Oil Pickup for the sump, along with the relevant washer and sealant. Got the car booked into a garage first thing tomorrow morning to have the pickup swapped out and an oil change and flush.

So, all things being equal, it'll be sorted tomorrow and will be fine.

We'll see......

Thats exactly the right thing to do though, you can't be 'too' careful when it comes to the sludge issue!

Well, as an update, Car went into the Garage a couple of weeks back for the work to be done.

Engine Flushed, Oil Changed and New Filter fitted but PickUp etc not changed as "they didn't have time"......

So, as it was all hunky dory, decided to wait until I got paid to have the Sump dropped and pickup changed....

However, 75 miles later, Oil Pressure Warning reappears.... Guess the lumpy crap in the Sump wasn't flushed out fully and is blocking the Pickup again.

So, this morning, she has been collected by a local VW/Audi Specialist that I didn't even know existed, and they are going to replace the Pickup and also the Oil Pump, just in case.

Won't be going back to the other shonky garage again!

Engine Flushed, Oil Changed and New Filter fitted but PickUp etc not changed as "they didn't have time"......

WTF?? That's appaling, I bet you were livid.
At least its not seized itself in the meantime.

i like they didnt change the pick up cus they didnt have time

As you can imagine, I was somewhat less than impressed with the excuse!

Talking to the Specialist I found, he reckons that they looked at it and decided it was more effort than it was worth so decided not to bother.

They did however say that because I specifically requested they use an engine flush, it was down to me if anything subsequently went wrong.....

So I've had a chat with Trading Standards anyway!

Just had an update from the Garage doing the work.

Apparently the pickup is the worst he has ever seen - there are solid deposits in the sump and on the pickup that look like pebbles. Also, in the Sump there is a plastic baffle which stops the oil sloshing around during ordering etc - this has broken down due to contact with the oil (who would have thought to put a plastic baffle in there? Doh.) and there are various bits of plastic floating around in the Sump too.

Anyway, no one has a baffle in stock, so probably going to be tomorrow before anymore is done to it.

I've got the bits coming back to me when it's done, so I'll stick some pics on here for info

I can't believe a garage sent it out saying "we didn't have time" it would have took them a lot longer if it had caused engine wear, i'm sure you would have prefered to wait a while longer and have it done right first time.
It's well known that 1.8t's crud up the sumps and the pick up due to turbo's carbonising oil after turning off.
The answer more regular oil changes and allow the engine/turbo to cool before shutting off.

Well, they did LOL

And I know about the crudding up of the oil, hence my comments in the original post - and let's face it, if I change the oil much more often than every 5k miles, I'm going be using more oil than Saudi Arabia can produce annually LOL

Hope you get it all sorted mate, been there done it I know what you're going through. It happened to me on the way home from the airport when I was tired and skint lol great timing :sadlike:

I think Audi should be paying/sorting it though because it is all to common on these engines, as much as I like the car I'd never buy another 1.8T. All the specialists i've spoken to have said they see it all the time.

As for that garage, thats shocking why even start the job if you can't finish it properly.

It's not great timing for me either to be honest - just got back into work after being made redundant 8 months ago - worked a whole month and found out I won't get paid until the end of June - fuggit!

I'd say that garage is "winging it" by the sounds of it bunch of no hopers. This may sound odd sad, but I work with a dude the had the same happen on a busy main road in aberdeen. So he stopped and got a taxi to audi got a new oil pick up, back to the car and changed it on the side of the road, So its not the involved to do. And before the critics comment I seen the pictures as he toke pictures as he was doing it. I didn't believe it till i'd seen them.

my oil pressure light came a year ago, had it removed, changed the pick up pipe and had 2 oil changes since then and and is have the next one later this mouth, car runs great, there is light at the end of the tunnel

Got her back - seems as sweet as a nut - cost me £380 in total, but well worth it methinks.

Into the bargain, I've found myself a cracking independent garage that's local to do all the oily bits I don't want to! And they are going to reciprocate by sending anyone that wants RNS-E, BT etc my way - sorted!

If i was you i`d change the oil line that feeds the turbo, this is a very small bore pipe that blocks up easily, If you`ve had the sludge issue then this pipe wont be far from blocking up to. When its blocked as mine did its bye bye turbo....And if you change the turbo like i did without realising that its death was caused by the blocked oil feed pipe its bye bye turbo again......Think the pipe was £80 easy to change a bit tight but not to hard, i`ve also heard of people taking the pipe off and steaming it clear.....

http://www.urotuning.com/shop/images/06B145771P.jpg

The links roughly what the pipe looks like you`ll see it connected to the oil pump at the back of the engine and bending round to the left to the turbo.....

you only need to change the pipe when you change the turbo
you dont need it sorting when you have the pickup pipe changed its a diffrent kinda sludge from the sump

I'm glad it all worked out well for you, that not a bad price for the peace off mind. Plenty have ignored the signs you saw and paid dearly. Plus you've found a garage you can trust which is invaluable.

Thought I'd share some pics of the new Pick Up and the one removed from my car......

First, the new....

Sorry about the quality of the images!

The lumpy yellow crap is a combination of bits of the dipstick that have broken down and fallen down inside the engine and the remains of the plastic baffle that sits in the Sump - really surprised that the engine has lasted this long with all that rubbish in there - you can also barely see the mesh of the pickup due to the crud. If I get time over the weekend, I intend to clean out the pickup, just to see how much accumulated crap is in there.

All I can say is don't ignore the Oil Pressure Warning - hell, get the pickup swapped out anyway! I didn't have to do the Oil Pump, but I figured that for the sake of £130 plus VAT, I'd have that little extra bit of confidence....

good call mate. Today my oil light flashed up at me today, only 2k miles after it was serviced at Audi, it went off when i pulled over for fuel and restarted the car, oil level on the dip stick seems ok, so not really sure what that's all about, but if it keeps popping up i may be pulling the sump off my V6 for an inspection!

The pics certainly tell the story! Thanks for posting them. The brittle plastic on the dipstick is a common issue. I recently replaced mine so it's a bit worrying that those bits all add to the mess.

Lucky fella.

The pump is a nice idea for the relative small cost once the engine is in bits.

Fingers crossed etc
