Hi everyone, I bought my 02 1.9tdi 130 sport avant A4 in November so didnt worry about the aircon at the time! After this lovely spot of weather we have been having i have noticed that the Air con is pretty non existent! So I took advantage of Salisbury Audi's cheap regas offer (£29). I drove back to work in it today and still nothing!! ****!!

Took a look at the forum and it seems this may be a common issue!

My Econ light works fine

My evaporator fan doesnt come on when the ac is switched on and off

The Compressor clutch doesnt seem to visually move of make any noise when switched on or off

The Engine revs do not change when switched on and off.

Annoyed at Audi for not noticing the fault when theyre website states that they carry out the following checks when carrying out a airconditioning refresh!

  • Measure the cabin temperature and operating pressures
  • Check system operating functions and refrigerant for contaminates
  • Recover the system contents, separating refrigerant and oil.
  • Create a vacuum to evaporate any moisture and check for leaks
  • Re-charge the system with the appropriate weight of refrigerant and lubricant
  • Add a UV dye (where necessary) to show up any future leaks when subjected to ultra violet light
  • Treat the evaporator to an anti-bacterial clean, eliminating bacteria and any unpleasant odours
  • Replace the pollen filter
Surely they should notice the AC isnt working.

I will be calling them after this to quesion the procedures, but I would also love to hear your opinions on the matter

Cheers
Ash

Edit:

It looks like someone at heritage Audi Salisbury has realised their mistake in the pricing and description of the Air Con Refresh and the website changed at 1525hrs today, still waiting for a chat with them directly!!

Cheeky gits, luckily i print screened the before and after description!!

Hi, yes i can imagine how annoying it is not to have air con working, I use mine most of the time. Regards yours , It should have a variable compressor on it which runs all the time and doesnt have a clutch. Mines a 03 and has this set up. I know the early ones still have a clutch on the compressor. If it is a variable type one, you won't notice the compressor kick in. You say you had it regassed at audi? did they charge you and said it was all ok?. It sounds like it may have a leak on the system, i did one recently and it was the condensor radiator that was leaking slowly. Its actually illegal to regas a air con system knowing there is a leak/possible leak. The correct way of doing it it if your car comes in with no gas, you need to nitrogen pressure test the system for leaks. Please let us know what audi said to you .

mate i have the same problem as you so if you get to find out what it is please please please let me no as its doing my head in ;-)

Is the ECON light on permanently?

As mentioned the system should be pressure checked before the refrigerant is refilled, when mine was done there was a corrosion hole in the condenser. It would be interesting to know what Audi did to it.

Well the saga continues, I have contacted audi and they said all they did was a refresh, "clear out the ducts of dust and grime, and a antibacterial bomb" and that they didnt recharge the gas as this is a separate service called an aircon service @ £75.

I told them that when I booked the service their website said that a "aircon refresh" consisted of:

Then the website changed to

  • Measure the cabin temperature and operating pressures
  • Check system operation
  • Change pollen filter
  • Treat the system to an antibacterial clean to eliminate any unpleasant adours
I had obviously highlighted a problem with the website pricing. They denied knowing obout the issue and after me sending them the print screens of before and after they agreed to refund my £29.

I am a little annoyed as i had to wait two hours (of work time, i am a contractor) for the car to have the ducts cleaned (something i could do myself, i fix helicopters for a living) and instead of honouring their advertising they are fobbing me off with a refund. I spent £750 earlier in the year with them getting work done!

I am considering my options before I reply to them. Surely it is easier for them to just do the service!

Your thoughts on the matter would be appreciated

Quattro James the Econ light switches on and off fine.

Hi ash, Yes sounds like audi may have cocked up and tried to cover up. Can you tell us exactly what it says on your invoice? does it say something like carry out air con refresh?) Does it mention anything about it not working , low on gas, leaks? You may be better off just taking it to a specialist who will just find out if it does have a leak or not , It sounds like it to me, most likely be the condensor leaking.

Audi don't know sh!t about aircon. Take it to an aircon specialist (not kwikfit or any other spanner monkeys claiming they can simply over pressurise your system to give you cooler air). I went through this whole pantomime with Southampton Audi. Numerous trips back and forth, and they still couldn't pinpoint the problem. Single trip to an aircon guy and he sorted it. It'll cost you £80+ but they know what they're doing and do it properly.

Well I'm kinda thinking about just taking the refund and not using them again. Annoyed that they obviously messed up and don't honour the product they sold me.

Andymac, where did you get yours done in the end, I work near romsey and imagine if your around southampton I may be able to do the same.

Well I sent a snotty email to the servicing manager and managing director of audi Salisbury on Monday! Still no reply!! Gits!!!

Stop stop stop. Had the same problem with mine, don't do anything cash wise until you have had it on VAGCOM. Common fault is the high pressure sensor failing giving a signal of open to ground. Basically this tells the system the pressure is too high so it never works. THe sensor is to the right of the condenser tucked in behind the passenger headlight. Its only made of soft alloy and had corroded on mine. Swapped this out with a replacement, can get the part number later and all the fault codes disappeared. A quick vac and re-gas and its cooler than a penguins nuts.

Turns out it needed a simple regas, audi ended up giving me a refund but ignored my letter. Won't be using them again!!
