I have to take the whole drivers door mirror housing off my car. Has/is there a guide on how to do this.

I'm ETKA/ELSA less for a few days :)

From memory there's a triangular shaped bit of plastic on the inside of the door, under that is the fixing. A bigish nut I think but can't really remember.

Bump for this lad's. I need to remove the whole mirror and casing as my OCD is driving me crazy. Heeeellpp.

You need to remove the black triangle as circled in red below, I think it unclips from memory.

And then the bolt (No. 7) will undo and allow the complete assembly to be removed.

full door in bits its a rite fukker
only an hours job tho

Do you need to do the full shebang to change the mirror caps or just if taking the full mirror off? Just thinking when I put on silver caps soon.

just the full unit

You can change the mirror caps without taking the mirror off.

You DON'T need to take the door card off to remove the mirror, just the plastic trim I've circled.

I know this is ancient, but just to add in for archives sake, when removing/replacing the whole mirror unit, you have to take the door cards off or, as I done, cut and mend the wire to the mirror as the plug cant fit through the mirror housing.

Hi

I have an Audi A4 and it needs a new wing mirror which I have bought (Full electric mirror)

You said it needs the door panel removing also. Do you have instructions on how to carry this out, including renewing the wing mirror.

Thanks

As I posted, I cut the wire rather than taking off the door panel.

Yes i read that. So basically. Cut the wire, add a connection block, fit the new wires into this and tuck in where?

Thanks

Cut the wires you bodgers just take the door panel off takes 2 mins......and then another 2 mins to plug it in...

Its not me that wants to cut the wires!!

Have you got any instructions on how to remove the door panel....seeing as it only takes 2 minutes :p

It's straight forward few screws around the handle, once they are removed just use a pry bar or screwdriver to pop the clips to remove panel.....

Hey guys you can see on the above pic from James the two connectors for the heated mirror part then there is another wire that comes out the same place and has a connector on it but doesnt connect to anything, does anyone know what this wire is for?

This connector is short and connects just under the black triangle you unclip in order to unscrew the wing mirror. This is the part i need to unclip in order to renew the whole mirror. I think i might have to also remove the door panel to get completely to the connector block. Here is the new mirror with the connector block attached this is the part where i'm stuck. If anyone knows exactly how to do this then please let me know ImageUploadedByTapatalk1356031595558650

I understand but I dont know what that spare connector that is within the wing mirror housing is for thats what Im asking?

As for you your going to have to take the door panel off its not a hard job there are plenty of write ups on here about it, or look at his for the door removal to access the window winder mechanism DIY: B6 A4 Window Regulator & Motor Replacement

The connector i'm assuming is for the electric power to the wing mirror itself isn't it? Without plugging this in the electric mirror or heated glass wouldn't work. I haven't seen a spare one. I'll look when i take mine off. Thanks for the door panel removal link but mines the Audi A4 1998 model and this is for the 2004, which will be different.

Thanks anyway!

No its not the wire for that fella if you look at the pic there are three so called wires coming out,
top one is power for electric motor, middle one is the random connector i am on about then the bottom wire splits into the two heated mirror connectors....

ps the door panel should be similar in terms of hidden screws just look for obvious trims that look like they can be removed, you've got a b5 then not a b6 A4?...you may not have the wire im on about above?!

I have no idea on what names you call the Audi. All i know is mine in the UK is called Audi A4 1.9 TDI SE 1998 Saloon.

I have just bought the Haynes manual so over the weekend I'll give it a go!

Thanks for the replies all the same ;)

Ok put the new wing mirror on. Its a lot easier than people make out.

On the Audi A4 1998 model to remove the door panel all you do is;

Remove 2 screws either side of the door frame at the top

Remove the screw in the door handle (located underneath)

Remove the oval shaped plastic trim this screw was connected to

Remove the 2 exposed screws now showing in the door handle

Now hold the door handle and lift up (door is on 4 hooks connected to the metal door) now the door panel is off.

Unclip any electrical components if need be...i didn't need to, just left the panel hanging

Unclip the plastic triangle on the door to expose the wing mirror screw

Unscrew this with a T40 Torx bit

Remove the sponge padding to the corner to expose the connector

Unclip the electrical component to the wing mirror & remove

Refit as above...its that simple!!

No Trims needed to be removed, nor any electrical switches prior to removing the door panel!!

Wait, wait, you were talking about a 1998 A4? That explains some of the confusion.

Erm, just that the 1998 model is a B5, but this is the B6 forum. the cars are quite different, so the best info you could get would be from the B5 forum otherwise you could be led down a wrong path, luckily the B5 forums are very useful and technical.

Thanks for the heads up on what type of Audi I've been driving for the last 13 years. Its an Audi A4 - B5?

Very confusing lol

Fella its simple as the styles change the model number changes they are all A4s but yours is a B5 version ours are all B6's then there is the B7 and the current model is a B8.........and so on

Bit like the iPhone then...they are all iPhones..., but apple confuse the matter by calling them 4, 4s & 5!

Bring back the simple days!

Kinda, but the models are really quite different, whereas the different models of iPhone look the same (well to me at least!). The B5 is the first A4 model then replaced by the B6 in 2001-ish, then B7 in 2005 and B8 in 2008 (or thereabouts). It's just like other models which are Mk1, Mk2 etc, so are all really different technically and visually from each other, as you can't compare a Mk1 Escort to a Mk6!

The B5 forum is very handy though as virtually all DIY work has been covered.

Escort Mk 1. Now you're talking!

Ok I'll pop on over to the B5 forums. You have a merry christmas fella!

Hi all.
Someone kicked off my drivers wing mirror ( RHS ). It has shear off the casting spinal.

It is an original Audi S4 with the solid aluminum ./ chrome cover. (NOT A PLASTIC ONE).

Would it be cheaper to replace it with a complete standard A4 plastic wing mirror assembly. Then remove the Metal cover off the original wing mirror and swap it onto the plastic one.

Any suggestion.

cheers

Hello,

Is it possible to detach the wing mirror by 1cm from the mounting (after undoing the bolt) without taking the door lining apart?

I need to replace the plastic trim but it won't fit under the mirror.

Cheers
