My S4 avant auto does about 22-23mpg when I take it easy - is this 'normal'?

I've always heard that 22-23 is the best you'll hope for with 17-19 being more typical.

There's a few S4 owners on here who can hopefully confirm for you.

I was being very light on the accelerator the other night on a long run on a bit of motorway and then A roads and I managed to get it to 25 but I was hardly pressing the throttle. I average betweeen 15 and 23 mpg really, 15+ around town and 23 on a motorway run, neither figures are driving hard either. Expect these figures to fall if you drive it hard.

Wow. I must have a good one then. I average 23-24 since I got the car. Over about 8000 miles all types of driving. I can get mid-high 20's on a run (average about 27-28 just on motorway) usually sitting about 75. On the normal A road run to the nearest city, around 22-23, in town about 21. Never averaged below 20 yet unless I'm absolutely booting it.

Averaged 30+ on the way back from the ski-ing once, over 50 miles of mainly B-roads, but that was taking it super easy.

I get around 20-22mpg driving to work and back, sometimes wafting along an A-Road I get around 24mpg. It could do with having a slightly longer 6th gear as at 70mph its doing around 2600rpm

I am just about to drive mine down to Switzerland to go snowboarding so it will be interesting to see what she will do with 4 people and a roof rack on

i drive my v8 s4 to work sometimes. that includes 20 miles on m62 and about 8 miles on saddleworth moors, i usually get it up to about 23 on motorway then i get carried away on the moors and its goes down to 21 lol the best ever i got was 26 . unfortunately i have to drive my astra which is on lpg for most days. v8 only comes out when i need to motivate myself. the lowest i got was about 100 miles out of a full tank, all 100 miles were foot down and overtake mode.

I do a 35 mile round trip everyday for work and get around 26-27 with largely dual carriage way driving. I can just about live with that, currently spending around 50 a week on fuel inc weekend trips out.

Depends on what you got, lol. I am looking to change my S4.

Generally autos are worse than manuals on fuel consumption, but I read somewhere that because of the longer gearing, motorway cruising in an auto S4 is better on the fuel than the manual. Some quoted as much as 15% better. Of course, it would probably be worse everywhere else.

I just agreed purchase of S4 Avant 2003 and pick it up next weekend. The specialist dealer reckoned I would get 30 on a motorway run. I was suprised as was expecting about what is being said here. Looking forward to watching the gauge though ;-)

Yeah, I regularly see that on the DIS. Usually going a bit faster though, 75-80 on dual carriageway usually sees me about there. If I drop to 60 mph I can often see 28-30 mpg. And averaging 45-50 I can see early 30's. But it is rare for me to drive at that speed, unless its coming back from ski-ing.

I've never got higher than 25 mpg but you can easily get early to mid twenties on A/B-road or motorway journeys without trying - only thing is you do have to pay attention to the DIS as a fractional movement on the throttle pedal (at certain revs) can mean the difference between 21 and 34 (live mpg that is).

On a drive down to Switzerland with 4 adults and lots of luggage and a roof box and snowboard bag strapped to the roof I average 19mpg cruising at 80mph, the range when full said 245 miles. On the way back with only 2 people and only the roof box I averaged around 22mpg, the range a more respective 300 miles. all I can say is thank god on the continent super unleaded is cheaper than diesel

I have had mine for a couple of months now. I have averaged 25mpg over probably 1,000 miles - I have a daily commute of A & B roads and some town traffic so generally take it easy to work, and only have a blast when someone wants to play, and have gained a few decent scalps. I have owned plenty of quick cars, and the reason I got the S4 was because I thought it was a bit understated, luxurious and very able to cruise, whilst also fun when you fancy which suits me down to the ground.

Today I took a pretty chilled drive from the midlands to bedford and with the M1 being fairly busy I set the cruise at 60 which was pretty much the flow for inside & middle lane, and A roads averaging 50 or 60 - I ended up over the 120 miles doing 33mpg . I used just over a quarter of a tank and the range is still showing over 300! That also included a bit of a play with a Nissan GTR

So top spec S4, running over 350 BHP, getting me 25mpg, not too bad.

as said it all depends how you drive and what roads you are on, to be honest mine is no worse than my 3.0q was in fact i sometimes wonder if its actually slightly better! when i first got it we spent 2 days driving in all sorts of conditions ie steady cruise, stuck in traffic on a14 and obviously a seriously good caning here and there and i worked it out to be 26 ave

On way back from collecting mine last weekend, a 450 mile trip, cruise control at 84, BP 95 RON, manual box, aircon on (cos didnt know how to work it lol) I got 26.9mpg.
Next day I drove about 5 miles through town and it dropped to 12mpg. Since then with reasonable driving with the odd wee burst it seems to have settled at 20mpg.

I have an auto S4 cab, read somewhere it was supposed to be better on fuel than the manual, which goes against the grain really. Anyway mine only averages 18 - 20 mpg, best I could get is about 24 on a carriageway, taking it steady.......but wheres the fun in that!

Prob wrong but I think the auto has a 'longer' top gear meaning it will do less revs at say 70mph.
