hi all,

i am going to pick up my misses new audi A4 1.8T Sport (190) Ltd edition hopefully next week.

Now i have only seen pics of it but it does look very clean. I dont normally do this kind of thing but i have paid a deposit already as its up in manchester and im in surrey - im heading up there next week to view/buy.. (buyers agreed if its not as described i get deposit back)..

now what i want to know is apart from the obvious is there anything specefic to look for on these. i dont know audis much really - i mean ive had a couple 325i's e30/36 a few years ago but i am well ito my jap :p and have been for the last 5yrs (currently got 3 inc my drift car :icon_thumright:

i just sold my misses ST fiesta as she had it long enough and we wanted something bigger so i suggested A4's ( i would only ever own jap or german now)...

soooo this particular one is standard apart from HID's but it has the full s-line kit on it with S4 badges (there going).. the guy said the engine starved oil and went basicly so had a company in essex fit a 0 mileaged engine and had turbo refurbed all with 2yrs warranty (parts/labour) engine has covered 2.5k and car 82k..

Should i be wary of this kind of thing or not.. my opinion is if it has warrantly then they should be ok - they guy assures me it a sound car and i wont be dissapointed - however i still need to ask for your advice..

he said the old SH had to go as it was not valid anymore due to new engine aswell..

What is ltd edition about these
is that kit standard on the sports too or just s-line?

thanks in advance for any help

regards

shaan

Welcome to the forum.

The oil starvation issue is a big problem on the 1.8T engine, caused by longlife servicing and the incorrect oil being used. Sooner it happened to someone else than you, and as long as you're aware of it it's not a problem.

Be sure to check it's a true S-Line by looking at the logbook as there are lots of clones around. The S-Line was a runout model of the last B6's and they only come with the 190 1.8T engine and a few bots and bobs like, perforated leather steering wheel, S-Line door badges and kick plates etc (thats not an exhaustive list...) The body kit was fitted to Sport models from 53 plate on so isn't exclusive to the S-Line.

As with all A4's they're fairly bulletproof, check aircon works, glovebox hinges work, and the wipers aren't slow or anything, none of those should put you off as they're all easily rectified but they're good bartering points. There's a few buyers guides on here if you look.

Wellcome
The New Engine Is It A 190bhp 1.8t or another 1.8t?
On a 190bhp the block will have BEX stamped on it

What year? Manual / Auto?

Make sure you know what to expect the 163PS and 190PS car's kW output should be and then check V5 for the car's description and then the log book for the car's power rating (in kW) and description... according to Parkers (LINK) the Limited Edition 1.8T was a 163bhp, that said, Parkers have been wrong on the "odd" occaision ("odd" as in occaision #1, #3, #5, #7, etc ;) )....

Not saying it's a not a clean car, etc... I'm just saying that if you're not keen for any reason and want to walk away, but don't have a quantifiable reason for it, then that might be your "out" where you still get to keep your deposit.

HonestJohn (for all his failings) does have a decent "what's Good" and "what's bad" section for the B6's.... just don't get too scared reading through it (try reading their reports for some really sound cars that you know well and you'll see all sorts of "faults" that you never knew about!).

Not sure what is specifically extra on the Ltd Edition models, but with Sport you get a 3-spoke sports steering wheel and (on earlier models) you got Xenons as standard and 30mm lower, firmer suspension, the sports also got 16" "trapeze" alloys on the earlier models and later (when they discontinued the Xenons) you got 17" alloys - and "sports" seats not RS-style recaro leather-trimmed buckets, but a happy medium - electric lumbar support and a bit more grippy and tighter than usual (fine for me at a short'n'stocky 16st, but a bit tight for my 6'1" mate who's very much the other side of 20st, but then Lazy-boyz are "snug" for him!!)... the stuff that you DON'T get on the Sport's as standard (but I think are standard on the SE) are heated washer nozzles*, heated wing mirrors, DIS computer (average MPG, washer fluid level warning), centre console arm rest.

Sometimes the Limited Editions just have some upgraded alloys, custom materials / trim on the interior and a CD-changer or something like that....

* they're mounted under the edge of the bonnet, so I just heat mine with a big (V6) lump of metal :)

*edit - just seen the post re bex.. Good question cos I'm
not sure?

Thanks

re bex engine, he checked and it is stamped bex so that's good news I think?!

What company in Essex fitted the engine? If it was a company called Specialised Engines then I wouldn't touch it with a very long stick...

there a lot of 1.8t, with diffrent power out puts 150, 163, 190, 215, 225bhp, with diffrent internals and turbo the engine code tell you which variant it is

43 -35 Offset. Go with the 35 offset it looks the best.

thats good to know cheers

out of interest what are the 5 spoke s-line wheels worth in average condition few kerb marks etc... cos they will be up for sale as as i collect car...
