    Almost definately the Altenator Free Wheel pulley!! Just had mine replaced. Did you by chance happen to have your cam belt done at a private garage rather than Audi? As the freewheel pulley is replaced during this service by audi. Independents tend to miss it. Think mine cost me about 86 quid fitted.

    Mines all sorted now, the old clutch had most of the grease leaked out of it and was truly knacered!

    New one fitted and sorted for 105. The part was from ECP and it was exactly the same make (INA i think) that came off the car with the geuine part!

    Don't get ripped off at Audi go to a decent independant specialist!

    Hi all..

    Firstly, thanks to those above that helped ID the issues I had with the alternator clutch etc.

    Pleased to announce the issue is now fixed.. Although the alternator clutch/pulley was replaced, I also needed the large 'vibration damper' pulley changing at the bottom; it appeared to be warped and wobbled on idle. (Didn't sound too healthy either..)

    Anywho, as my car has just ticked the 122k mark, I had my cambelt etc done at the same time as well as a service... It wasn't cheap, but, atleast it's done and sounds/drives/feel sooo much better.

    good to hear its all sorted now, nothing nicer than when a car is 100% may it stay that way(not likely LOL).

    I have a TDI 130PD with this problem and beyond.
    I had the cambelt done at 120K at a place I know and respect (not dealer / manufacturer).
    3 days after the cambelt was done the tensioner bolt snapped. Problem diagnosed as worn out tensioner damper. That was replaced and 4 days later the thing went again.
    This time the diagnosis was you'd hope correct, cause alternator clutch / pulley.
    Tensioner & damper were fine but the bolt had snapped.
    Bolt, alt clutch, belt were replaced.
    We had hoped all was fine but after ~ 2 weeks it's gone again.

    I don't drive the car much, have done each time to pick it up and it's been quiet and well behaved.
    My wife who uses it daily for shortish journeys had noticed a 'bit of noise' as described above just before each episode.

    So do these clutches fail after 120K miles or perhaps just 200? Guess we were just unlucky.

    Could there be an underlying problem with the alternator that's loading the belt too much?
    Once the belt is off the steering pump, viscous drive fan pulley and alternator are free to turn.

    This last time the tensioner has been battered around a bit so another new one needed I guess.

    Each time the tensioner bolt that is about 130mm long has been replaced with a high tensile one.
    Could that be the problem - too brittle.

    The main dealers are being very cagey about this fault and don't want to let on much at all.

    There is a fair bit of evidence on the internet all pointing to the alt clutch...

    I had this noise, ended up replacing the alternator pulley, didn't cure it and ended up being the air con compressor.

    That's interesting info will89 - was the compressor seized or how did you/they tell?

    They took the belt off and moved it by hand, it was making a noise and i think it was wobbling too. Apparently the ball bearings inside dry up over time/use, and then they crumble. Cost 410 for the air con compressor fitted; cash in hand job.

    So what exactly is the point of this clutch?

    The engines in the B5 models are more or less identical to their B6 cousins, yet the B5's manage perfectly fine with a solid alternator pulley...

    post 37 second paragraph
    and the engines in the B5 and B6 are very different
    the clutch is down to higher output alternators as more modern cars have more electronics but read the post .

    My problem looks like being the Tensioner bolt thread had taken such a hammering it was rounded out and not holding the tensioner in place properly.
    This has been Helicoiled and all new parts fitted and so far is holding up well. The garage did this free of charge as they considered they should have spotted this first time around!
