    Audi B6 S4, or B7 2.0T Quattro?

    Shall I buy a B6 S4, or a B7 2.0T Quattro?
Both great - but very different cars..

Have you ever driven a V8? Try one and I think your mind will be made up very quickly. After driving the B6 S4 (that I bought shortly afterwards) there was no way I could settle for a 4 pot.

Bit like deciding between Kalibre or Corona, both are technically beer, but Sooooo different.

I adore the looks of the B6 over the B7 (maybe I'd like the B7 rear lights though) and especially the B6 S4. I ran out of time when leaving the UK or I would have fixed a damaged black B6 S4 saloon I had my eye on.
That said i've not driven either. Driven sensibly the fuel economy of the 2.0T may be better? ha! did I say sensibly? sorry.. I'm off to flail myself with a braided fuel hose...

If you know you can afford the running costs of the S4 then there's no decision to be made......it's already been made for you .

I'd have the exhaust note as my ring tone and phone myself just to hear it, probably losing my job after a short period of time.

The S4 is a fantastic car, but the 2.0T does have positives too. I like the B7 shape, just as much as the B6. The fuel economy would be better with the 2.0T. And if your into your modding, then the 2.0T has such potential mod-wise. You could quite easily be getting the same power as the S4 V8 with a few upgrades. (But again depends if you want to spend more money doing that, and the mods do hurt resale value.)

But saying that, the B6 is a lovely car. The sound of the V8 is to die for. So its just if you can justify the economy.

I think you'd need to spend quite a bit to get a 2.0T even if it was the later 220BHP car up to the 344BHP of the S4.

S4 will be heavy up front though, more expensive to run and maintain and a lot of the jobs require the engine out, meaninging potential bills. I'd still find it a hard decision myself though and these where both on my list along with a 3.0TDI B7 last year. Need to drive both cars and be fully aware of the maintanance costs. But the V8 growl

out of interest, what kind of jobs does the engine have to come out for that you might get away with on another car?

Timing chain tensioner is a common failure on the V8 S4 which is an engine out job, that would be my biggest concern. The V8 is massive in a small space though so not the easiest to work on. The V6 takes up enough room as it is and a dealership would be trying to take that out for a clutch change at the owners expense a competent specialist may be different though. There is loads of room around a four pot motor in an A4 chassis though.

I think my signature settles this debate

They are two very different cars imo, sure you can tune a 2L turbo to the same if not more power than the S4 but then you haven't got a standard car, you would never see any of that money back and at the end of the day it still wouldn't be an S...

Yeah, I find it a bit tight at times with mine so I can imagine the V8 would be a monster to work around. So the advice would be to buy an S4 that's had the timing chain and tensioners done then? bring on the V8!!!!
