Hi ive bought a 2.5tdi avant but the chocolate cams are shot wheres the best place to get replacments from how much? are there any uprated ones or peformance ones available what else needs changing?:blackrs4:

i am in the same boat mate, what do you mean by chocolate cams?if your talking about your camshafts as fare as i know you need 4 cam 24 rocker arms 24 trust pads and 24 lifters/hydraulic tappets and all seals and gaskets that go with it.ive seen a full set of all of above except seals and gaskets on the net for around 800euro

You better off with rebuilding your cams, DBilas can rod weld them then grind them for you, failing that, Bradford cams can do that also. I would steer clear of the cheap cams from Germany as they are ok-ish but very hard to set-up right(there are no timing marks on). Also, if money were no problem, i would only get genuine cams and use quality synthetic oil 5w40 as a min. Lifters are 6.50 at the dealers and rocker arms about 7 quid each. Trust pads only dealer can supply...

i can give you a full breakdown of cost as i'm currently having my 2.5 rebuilt due to waterpump failure,

invoice is currently sitting at £4k ;(

arnt the cams about 192 each at the dealer?
replace the rocker arms that are worn. again look at the tappets see if theyre worn, easy to see if the round top on them is now oval.

replace only what you need to.

How much of that was labour £4.5k seems a lot for top end repair

I was unlucky mate, very. £1.5k + vat for the replacement engine, £1k ish to swap it over. Then it failed again within a few days and the engine supplier 'fixed' it - but when I finally got it back it was running like a bag of nails so I had to spend a further £1.5k on parts and labour to get it running right. It cost me big.

Sad times :(

****** hell, to be a fly on the wall at garages eh?

I dont know how garages can come up with prices like these as in the event of a cambelt failure its only a few (If any) valves who bend. They bend if numpty owners try to restart the engine. Cams are 200 each (if needed) and rockers are 6-7 quid each from dealers. Lifters are 6.50 each- genuine and trust pads are only available from dealer (rockers and lifters can be bought from good motorfactors but stay with INA or Febi). Add 2 sets of head bolts, 2 headgaskets and a full cambelt kit and the rest is just labour... a bit dear if you ask me ! I have rebuilt me AKE engine due to a failed cambelt (cheap Dayco rubbish) and i had about 15 rockers brocken and not a single valve bent ! I had however replaced a crankshaft oil seal housing(125 quid from dealer), crank bolt(7 quid), a full cambelt kit (250 quid), genuine thermostat (25 quid), water pump(30 quid) and the whole rebuild tool about a week-due to work comitments.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

My garage who I know and trust saw a lot of damage when they took the head off, and advised sourcing a replacement complete engine - that was their genuine opinion at the time so I went with it and found a secondhand engine from a supplier in Wales. My garage swapped it (hence the labour bill) and I got the car back quite quickly, but it didn't start very well, so it went back to my garage who swapped injectors and glowplugs with my original engine before it got returned. This improved it somewhat but it was never quite right so I booked it in at a local specialist for a scan etc.

The day before this happened the bolt on the idler pulley broke and belt skipped again. I spoke to the engine place in Wales who came and collect the car and it took them nearly a month to rebuild/replace the engine. I don't really know what they did as the trust was lost by this point. What they did do was damage ALL of my newly refurbed wheels with the straps on the truck, break the belly pan, get oil all over the interior etc etc

When i got it back it wasn't great so it went into the specialist for some work. They told me that the timing gear didn't 'look' new and I wasn't about to experience that again, so I got them to replace everything, water pump, thermostat etc. It also needed a few bits like needle valve, viscous coupling for the fan so the cost soon built up.

I was unlucky, and learnt a lot from the whole experience. But what do you do? I'd rather spent £4.5k for the car to be great again than £3k for the bag of rubbish it was at the time. I was without a car from the end of October till early February, and that is one serious pita. I took the genuine advice from my original garage which I stand by them for. Live and learn I guess, but take no chances with timing gear!

i've not got the invoices here with me but i'll scan them & put them up, i was very unlucky! 3 new cams were required but got the 4th for piece of mind, all but 7 valves were damaged. again, for the sake of the extra 20 quid each, we done all of them.

replaced another few bits as we went due to other common issues happening at the same time (radiator, oil filter housing & a couple others) luckily the heads were okay as they're £1.5k each from audi.

add the labour in & it all adds up. its a specialist (ex audi mastertech) doing it, i'm getting a reduced £38ph rate on the book time rather than actual rebuild time. Audi say its 22 hours for a top end strip down & rebuild,

i can give you a full breakdown of cost as i'm currently having my 2.5 rebuilt due to waterpump failure,

working on one at present as we speak, hence looking for some info and seen the thread, £1601 for a set of 4 cams, 24 lifters, 24 rockers, oil pump, water pump, timing belt kit, and all service parts, eg, oil, filter, air filter, fuel and pollen filter....not cheap.....there is still labour to pay for yet....

£1601 for 4 camshafts, 24 lifters, 24 rockers, oil pump, water pump, timing belt kit, 2 rocker cover gaskets, and all service parts, eg oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, pollen filter, still need to get inlet manifold gasket, camshaft oil seals, and labour to pay for yet........not a cheap job by anyones means, feel sorry for the customer. he is a good friend so i will be reasonable but still a dear job........

What is the distance across the cam lobe my car arrives tommrrow and want to check if mine are excessivley worn and need replacing no need to replace them if there not worn or is there any other checks?

Just been through this myself and my advice to anyone having the camshafts replaced is to buy OEM parts and NOT buy cheap alternatives from eBay or any other source. I made the mistake of buying a cheaper than usual full cam kit only for one of the rocker arms to snap clean in two after only 100 miles use.
Luckily I got away with it and the broken rocker arm didn't damage a valve or cause any other damage to the engine, but it did take alot of phone calls and hassle for me to get my money back on the cheap kit.

In the process I found a company called AW Engineering who sell the OEM cam kits for slightly less than the dealers. The new cam kit has been in since June and I have covered just under 5'000 miles and so far so good. The car now pulls like a train again, the mpg has gone up and it doesn't sound like a bag of nails anymore! :icon_thumright:
